Could you please explain this bible phrase?

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me,
let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels;
and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

Jesus was saying that we need to put Him and the work He has given us to do first, above all else. Following Jesus can cost us material gains, but those pale in comparison with the spiritual blessings. The person who makes those choices and seeks first the Kingdom of God, thus showing God by his actions that he values an eternity with Him above all else, is the one God will reward with an eternal relationship with Him.
