in my debate? could you come up with cross-examination questions against censorship to ask in my debate? im affirmative (censorship should be abolished or lessened)

Other than speech that poses an immediate threat to the safety of others (like shouting "fire" in a crowded auditorium which might cause a stampede) who gets to decide what gets censored?

Political speech... speech challenging the government itself is THE most protected form of speech.... so who decides??? It cannot be the government.... unless we eviscerate the 1st Amendment.

If we are a free society.... free to debate everything from cookie recipes to the overthrow of the government itself.... then there must NOT be a central authority that determines what is okay to speak about and what is not.

P.S. -- Read a bit about Noam Chomsky.... he once had his life repeatedly threatened because his words were used in the forward of a book.... that book was written by a Frenchmen.... the book was a denial of the holocaust. The French prosecuted the author for publishing his theory that the holocaust never occurred.... Chomsky stood by his side saying in effect, that speech which is most reviled, the speech that goes against what the VAST majority believe... is the most important type of speech because it voices not only different opinions and beliefs but is also the only voice of dissent... the voice speaking out against the status quo. While he never agreed with the subject of the book... he withstood threats to his life in order to defend another man's right to express his thoughts, ideas, and beliefs... however unpopular those beliefs may be.

And if we crush all dissenters... if we silence all critics.... and we all get the same news from the same sources saying exactly the same things... well then we are depriving OURSELVES of freedom and liberty and original thought.

After all... this country was founded on strong dissent... first verbal dissent.... then written in in newspapers and the things like the Federalist Papers.... then eventually leading to violent overthrow of the government.

The signing the Declaration of Independence and sending a copy to King George... well that was as good as signing one's own death warrant as a subject of the British Empire in 1776. Quashing freedom of speech under pain of death for treason... treason not by act at first but by words alone. That was the way of the world in 1776.... and God help us all if we begin to slide down that slippery slope again.

To quash dissenting speech is to DIRECTLY quash the most important freedom that we have... the freedom of FREE PEOPLE to discuss novel ideas and to propose WHATEVER change is necessary.

We are a government BY the people... and the people have no right to deprive liberty to another person for words alone.

EDIT: Bubbles-- censorship is NECESSARILY a government act. Things like Yahoo! Answers are privately owned. What they are doing is enforcing their own rules... on their own site... which is NOT censorship. You are perfectly free to go elsewhere to post your opinions and express your freedom of speech. I am free to post and remove comments on my blog.... and so are you... again NOT CENSORSHIP.

Censorship is a government act.... not a private or business act.... Yahoo! has no authority to punish you or deprive your freedom no matter how heinous a thing you might post. Their only recourse is to take it down.... and perhaps prevent you from using THEIR website.

Ok use yahoo answers as an example.

The only possible exception for reporting unless for safety

ie

bomb making
DIY abortion advice
or personal info ie facebook pages, phone numbers
Or just pure insults and name calling with no adding to the debate

The only reason for most reporting is that those reporting to censor posters or questions appears to be as they have already lost the argument.

They cant win fairly with a well constructed counter argumen to a poitn raised. They have no backing up to their argument in the form of evidence, links, experience just popular thinkign so use the reporting system to hide opposing viewpoints and evidence.


Principly this is in the teen and pregancy sections and the relgious one.

Ie if you post info on crimes and abuses of a relgion like honour killings, forced arranged marriage, female genital mutilation, executions by torture of teenage girls for making love , etc


or crimes of the pope and church such as that last pope's support for general pinochet who had girls raped by dogs , along with the imprisionment and torture for life of 30,000 girls up till 1996 in what were termed the irish magdelen laundires. Or how christins go around murdering children in Africa accused of witchcraft etc.

it gets removes so people only here about christmasd and relgious morals.


This gives a biased view much like hiding all the crimes of the nazis and only allowing info like they had lots of kids activities and invented motor ways and that nice herbie car the VW Beetle.

This is how the worst and most evil criminal organisations get away with being seen as a nationsla moral pillar.




Ask why relgious education does not focus on the criminal actions of the inquistion and how many the church had murdered.

Or how in africa how anti abortion and the church attiude to condoms leaves millions of kids on the streets to be peados playthings ot trafficed into slavoury.


Yet you dont hear about that... kids grow up with censored view so have the wrong idea about relgions.

Think why would people censor videos of girls stoned to death whilst procliaming that islam is moral?


Likewise look how censorship and ignorance is the main cause of all the teengers getting pregant in the teen section here looking at how many dont know pulling out does not work and clueless about mornign after pills


Compare the uk and america with the Netherlands which does not censor sex ed from kids
