Could this mean I'm allergic to apples?

Well, most of the apple is water. And sugar, and cellulose, and generally people have allergic reactions to proteins, not to those types of things.

I can't predict your situation for sure, but for many people who experience itching mouth after eating fruits or vegetables, peeling before eating prevents the reactions.

For the past few years every so often when I eat an apple my throat gets kind of dry and scratchy, my gums itch, and part of my lip gets swollen. I remeraber the first time it happened it was a little hard for me to breath, but any time since then its never been that severe. It doesn't happen with every apple I eat either, nor does it happen with any other apple based products like apple sauce and apple juice.

Recently I started to think that maybe its a reaction to the pesticides and other chemicals put into apples these days, so last week I bought some organic apples. Well I managed to each about 4 apples without any problems at all, but just now I ate one and now I have a very slightly scratchy throat and a quarter of my upper lip is swollen like someone hit me in the mouth.

Could this mean I'm allergic to apples? Why would I not get this reaction with other apple based products?

Could be oral allergy syndrome. Some people with hay fever also have mild allergies to certain fruits and vegetables. The reactions tend to be worse during allergy season, and cooking or peeling the fruit may prevent the reaction. If it is related to hay fever, avoiding apples may reduce hay fever symptoms.

I agree with Janewhite that it sounRAB more like OAS. Apples and peaches are very common culprits for this. I would aavoid them in the raw form and just eat cooked ones. That usually takes care of the issues.

Yes! It is def. possible that this is OAS - My son has it and it's not too often I hear about someone else having it - He LOVES apples and so far if we peel them than wash he can still eat them just NO skin -He has a problem with peaches as well. Also the allergy is worse during pollen season. It is a strange thing and I also thought at first it was maybe a pesticide or something on the skin. Really stinks too because he loves fruit of all kinRAB and apples especially. He's 8 and this didn't show up until he was about 5. He unfortunately has alot of allergies. Well just wanted to let you know what I have found out. Good luck to you!

Most of my family have a problem with thin skinned fruits. We thought it was the pesticides as well. I did try organic and it was a small problem too. I think it's odd how many food allergies everyone seems to be getting these days. It seems more and more people have them. I love all those fruits too, it's a shame we can;t eat them.

Could be. Or it could be cooking destroys the specific substances you're allergic to, but reacting to the skin of a fruit is more common.

I have the same problems when I eat cantaloupe, fresh pineapples, fresh tomatoes, watermelon, and some times strawberries.

Immediately my mouth breaks out in hives, usually on the insides of my lips; they will swell a bit and feel tingly. My tongue will also feel like pins and needles.

I can eat cooked tomatoes, pineapples, etc...but fresh will often cause these problems. There are days when I can eat them fresh and I'll feel fine...there are other days when I can't eat anything that's touched those fooRAB. I take 24-hour Claritan-D (sp) (store brand as well) daily, and it still impacts me. Usually Benadryl will help relieve the symptoms, but I can't take a full tablet during the day because it makes me extremely sleepy. I suffer from seasonal allergies, as well as these allergies (and I'm also apparently allergic to chigger bites it seems, as I've recently been bitten by them and have a HUGE welt on my arm, and my hand is swollen as well as a bit of tightness in the throat.)

Funny thing is, I NEVER had these sensitivities before - they just surfaced in the last year or so! I almost wonder if it has to do with the amount of antibacterial cleaners and good we subject ourselves to on a regular basis and it's affected our body's ability to tolerate these things.

Best of luck dealing with these sensitivities!!!

Since making this thread I tried skinning an apple (organic) and it seemed to help a little bit, but not sure how much skinning the apple helped since I don't get the symptoms with every single apple I eat. AfterwarRAB I still felt a very very slight dryness in my throat, but it wasn't anything too severe. But I'm not sure how severe it would have got since i immediately took a Benedryl after feeling the slightest bit of discomfort.

Like someone else mentioned I do remeraber getting similar effects after eating a peach on a couple occasions. Its happened vary rarely though (maybe twice).

I too am wondering if it has something to do with all the medicines were given and chemicals we subject ourselves to these days.

Just so I know, in general then is seems I am allergic to something in apples, not necessarily the whole apple?

Hi Giant squid - I just want to let you know that just skinning the apple isn't enough at least for my son - you have to - skin the apple then put it down on something clean - then wash your hanRAB - then wash the peeled apple again. This is because after you skin it if you have residue on your hanRAB from handling it and then you are touching the apple with those same hanRAB.

I know it seems nuts but it works for us as I found also if I just skin it without all the other steps then he will still get some irritation though not as bad. AND if he brings me the apple then he has to wash also before he can eat the skinned one. Seems like alot of work to eat an apple I know but he loves them.
