Could this be acid reflux?

I have been to see a consultant today about the swelling in the arch in my throat, he asked me if I get heartburn as it could be acid reflux, thing is I dont get heartburn much, ocassionaly I get that burning feeling in my throat, so anyone know if its possible to have acid reflux without constant heartburn?
 
If acid or other stomach contents are refluxing up into your throat, you likely have a type of reflux called LPR. You can research that on this board as well as elsewhere. With LPR many people (like me) never experience heartburn. What type of "consultant" did you see? An ENT? Did he scope your throat? An ENT should be able to scope your throat (painlessly) to see if you have reflux damage not only in your throat but at your vocal corRAB.
 
Hi, yes it was ent consultant, he did put the scope down my throat(and it was painfull!) he didnt say he could see anything but did say he was sending me for a biopsy of my tongue? which is worrying me too! I have googled the symptoms of LPR and do have some of them ie the coughing phlem etc, its worrying me now as I have had this throat problem for some months!

I'm sorry your scope procedure hurt. I guess we need to be careful about making such blanket statements here because what's painless to one person may be painful to another. I describe my scope experience as "a very strange feeling" but not at all painful.

Who is he sending you to for a biopsy of your tongue? I'm surprised he (the ENT) wouldn't do a biopsy there, but I don't know much about this...
 
Yes, I did have swelling in my throat and around my vocal corRAB but no lesions and nothing the ENT thought he needed a biopsy of. I'm getting the rest of my esophagus scoped next week (by a GI doc) and we'll see what he says about lower esophagus swelling and whether there's anything there that neeRAB to be biopsied.
 
How long did your swelling last for? mines been the same for 8mths!!
It frightens me the fact I have to have biopsy!

Hi, hes sending me back to the NHS as he said his fees are very expensive!
Thinking about it I now think its my gullet hes taking a biopsy of.he did say he thought my throat problem was acid lying in my throat at night but wants to see if theres any underlying reasons for the swelling.
Did you have any swelling in your throat?, mines on the arch just in front of the tonsil area.

He also said I have infection in my nose so I wondered if that was causing my throat problem.
 
Try to not freak yourself out over having the biopsy. It is my understanding that with esophagitis it is the only way to know if the esophagus has precancerous changes (or not) in the absence of obvious lesions. I'm assuming the optical view during scoping can't be that great, and maybe it's not all that unusual for a biopsy to be taken. I'll find out more this week and will let you know what my GI says about it. Who knows - maybe I'll be having a biopsy this week, too. I've actually had numerous biopsies for various things in my life and most of them have turned out to be nothing. Try to not get worked up over it because that may make your condition worse.

I'm not sure how swollen my throat still is or whether my lower esophagus is swollen. I see my ENT on Tuesday and I assume he'll re-scope my throat to see if it's improved. Most days it does FEEL better, although today has been a bad day and I feel like I'm headed back to square one. Patience is in order - both the ENT and my primary doc said this damage can take quite a while to heal.
 
in july after only less than a month of this beast called gerd and esophagitis my gi also took a biopsy which was negative but now i am terrified that after 5 months of swelling and inflamation it could be, but i should try to be level headed....so anyways, i think its pretty routine, while they are already in there.

ps. k9love...you have also had a swollen throat (esophagitis) for months?? me too, this is madness, i've never experienced anything like it.
