Could the iPhone be good news for Nokia fans in the US

- Only 2 Megapixel camera
- No 3G
- No built in GPS

Functionality and ease of use looks VERY impressive but not enough to sway me from my N95 desire. Personally I would have to use a bluetooth headset because I would never hold that up to my face to make a call. Simply too large for my personal taste.

Simply a matter of what the user desires.

I thought I saw on the live feed from the mac rumors website that it was going to run a version of OS X. This will make it very interesting indeed. Can't verify that right now.....gotta go watch the keynote address and iPhone introduction on Apple's website.....and it's overloaded at the moment.

I kind of likened the s60 interface to the Apple OS over this past month using it (s60v3) for the first time. Easy to understand (but complicated underneath), for even the most simple of users. But, can be as hardcore as you want it (but still relatively understandable).

I wonder who will carry this 'touch screen' phone? Women? I dont think guys will like it as it is pain in the a$$ to protect that big screen from scratches!

i actually like this device and i bet top dollar this thing will fly off the shelves. the IPod isn't the best mp3 player, and the razr isn't the best phone, but they are the best selling (mp3 player/cell phone). i'm also waiting for the n95, this treo 750 is nice but i find myself being able to do things just as well w/ s60 and being able to do them 1 handed a lot easier, this is also where i see the IPhone being a pain, 1 handed use.

the thing is that i use my n80 and sync it with outlook....i wont be able to do that with the iphone.
if the iphone did what the n80 does in that area and the OS works really well (considering i havent seen reviews or anyone say what its like to use it yet...although i havent looked too hard for that info) then i might switch to it. it would also have to have 3g and at least 3mp camera also.
if so.....and people have given it good reviews, i might consider it......i think future generations of it will satisfy me....although i wonder what the price tag might be for future generations of it.
i would like to use the wifi in it to connect to a computer and right now with the iphone you cant....i see that as being a major barrier in my reasoning not to look at the current generation of the iphone......but who's to say later in a future generation one.

the n95 would suit my needs better with camer and gps and wifi and since i alsready have a 30gig mp3 player (not ipod) i'm happy at the moment.

i hope it does mean nokia release some real competitive products at it though.
i've always had a nokia phone......but i'm not loyal to them if something comes along and meets my needs. it just happens that the n80 does meet what i require at the moment.
time will tell...

I read somewhere that the screen is made of zirconium or something. That can be close to the mineral crystal used in cheaper "premium watches" Even though it is not sapphire crystal, it is definitely hard as hell to scratch.

Ahh but its specs dont suggest a huge phone, and it s thin...something super important to US consumers (not necessarily us phone geeks) and it does look really nice...as in worth any bulk that it may come with

but back to the topic of this thread. the iphone won't lead to nokia showing more attention to the us. bottom line is the money they'd make. the average joe doesn't care about what the n95 can do, but rather opt for the slim shiny NEW wow factor gadget which American's go for, and which really nokia doesn't make. sure the n95 i'm dying for, but it doesn't have that WOW to it appearance wise. the best bet nokia had was the 8801, even though it was lackluster in the feature dept.

This is my concern. Windows mobile is a stripped down windows and it sucks imho. I have owned a few phones running it....and I still go back to Symbian. Palm is too old school for me now (loved the treo before everyone had it...now the palm version seems archaic. The iPhone is supposedly running OSX. not a slimmer version or something, but real OSX. Plus....Apple screw up less than MS in regards to their mobile devices imo. But hey...they are designing the software AND the hardware. perfect harmony

I just don't get everyone complaining that this phone is too expensive. What was the starting price of the Razor when it FIRST hit the market? Price erosion will eventually come around on the iPhone like it has on the Razor (maybe not to the same degree, but some).

IMO, this product is going to FLY off the shelves, and probably have a waiting period to get one if Apple doesn't ramp up an aggressive initial production.

Stock market seems to agree (at least for now), with what it is doing to Apple's stock price!?!

Apple slashing the price? hmm.. will have to wait & see. but at the starting price with 2 yr contract sales wont be crazy as Apple/Cingular is thinking now.

My personal prediction is that the iPhone will SELL great, but that there will be a high return rate, and an equally high damage rate.

Return - I think that it's got the sex appeal for sure. People will spend on it just like they did the RAZR, which if you'll recall debuted at the same price point half a decade ago. But I think the honeymoon will end quickly when they try to use it. I would think people will get it expecting it to be all that, but then realize that it's a bit confusing, even with the UI, and will return it for something else with iTunes, if that's waht they got it for.

Damage - we in the States are brutal on our phones. Plus, the touchscreen won't last. I think it was Zerilos in some other thread that pointed out that those who carry touch-screen devices now have done so for years. They're the people who used to carry a phone AND a PDA, and are now able to carry just one. They've been there and know how to care for a touchscreen, they know about screen protectors and how not to press too hard all the time and not to put it in your pocket with your keys and things like that. The general population doesn't, and I can foresee that being a downfall.

Other than that, I think it's going to bomb out for the same reasons others do. No 3G is the big killer. Personally, I think it's unbelievably irresponsible of CINGULAR to allow a phone this hot to come out on their network anymore.

In the past 18 months, think how much money they have poured into 3G build-out. They just announced a few weeks ago, very proudly, that they've got it live in 160 markets, and now they allow the hottest phone of the year (only in buzz. I don't think it'll be the hot seller of the year) to come out and not take advantage of that network?

I realize that Jobs stated 3G is coming, but I personally don't foresee that coming on this model, and I don't believe that's a simple software update to support it. I think there's going to have to be a 2nd iPhone with 3G.

That being said, I personally would rather get a Nokia N-Series like the N91. Not the same storage capacity (well, the N91 does, but the others don't) but for MUCH cheaper, they do SO much more. If the iPhone was about $100 cheaper and had 3G, I'd give it a more serious look.

Price slashing and price erosion are two very different things....

Apple/Cingular will not have to do any price slashing for quite some time if the iPhone comes out of the starting gates as being a semi-solid (better than the Razor) performer.

It probably will always be a non-starter product for any hard core anti Apple skeptic, and that being a good % of the s60 users, at least what is being seen from the posts around here.

But....the point is, that's not Apple's market. They don't care. Even in the presentation they are predicting/hoping for a 1% marketshare IN 2008. That's a pretty slow ramp in grabbing marketshare.

It would be interesting to see what Nokia's overall marketshare is with the TOTAL of the Symbian OS (and not any other phone OS).
