Could someone help me figure out this aspect of Costa Rican culture?

If a person (gringo) is 21 and a girl that is 16 (local) likes him and he is attracted to her, some people seem to look weirdly at that because, especially in a "conservative" country like Costa Rica, that is just wrong.

But others say, "This isn't the U.S. Age doesn't matter here that much, and girls here can be mature at a young age, so that's completely fine!"

I just have trouble believing that a 21 year old dating a 16 year old is "fine" in a conservative country... Or, if the guy is a gringo, it is almost common that he would find some younger girl and this is okay? Can someone help me figure this out? What do you think?

*and I know Costa Rica is not very conservative by Latin American standards, but it IS more conservative that the U.S.
Age of consent in Costa Rica is 15. Not that this is what I think about, I am simply noting that I suppose this is the age where they don't consider her a "minor" any more.

But my. You're right. 21 and 26 seems fine. The biggest problem, in my mind, of 21 and 16 is that the 21 year old is 1 year away from completing his college education and the 16 year old is about 6 years away.
