Hello,

My father's been a cop for over 30 years and two weeks ago he mentally just shut off. Doctor believes he's suffering from depression and anxiety attacks. He's lost 18lbs in two weeks from not eating. His symptoms are hanRAB shake, can't sleep, tightness in throat, loss of appetite, etc. He just simply isn't my dad anymore. Doesn't want to work, watch tv, or pretty much anything. Doctor put him on Lexapro two weeks ago and still no change. Doc says in may take another two weeks to kick in but I think maybe my dad has something else wrong with him.

I do not suffer from depression or anxiety so I'm asking anyone who has, are these normal symptoms for this condition? If so, does lexapro work and when does it take effect? And if not, does anyone know what the heck this is?

Any comments are greatly appreciated!

Anything happen in his career or life that could have triggered anything? Loss of a friend, partner, anything traumatizing? His he going to a GP or a Psychiatrist? But I have had all those symptoms and they are signs of anxiety and depression, I've had those plus more and I'll tell you it's no fun. Lexapro does work, but not for everyone. I could take anywhere from 2-5 weeks to fully kick in, that's just the way SSRIs work. But everyone is different and Lexapro didn't work for me, Celexa. It's a matter of time and finding the right medication. Also reading books on anxiety and depression help a lot, maybe try to find one for him. If he went to the doc and they ruled out anything serious then it is anxiety and depression. Those symptoms are normal.
