could my cat find his way back home and be scared of me?

i moved after a separation my ex took the cat with him it ran away two days later now 2 years later i am back in my house and there is a cat that looks just like mine that stays in the back yard but will not come to me it has been out there every day for several months now. could it be my cat has found his way back home and to scared to come to me
 
It most likely is your cat. Just feed him, give him water and talk softly. Why not keep the back door open when you are home. He may just come in.

After two years, if it is your cat, he will not remember you after that much time has passed. And who knows what has happened to him in those two years, so he might also fear people, too.

The best way to win him over would be to start providing him some food in the back yard. Give him a couple of weeks to just eat the food without you being outside. Then be outside when he is eating, but not near him. Then just continually get closer and closer to him. If he backs away, go slower, but if he continues to eat, he'll likely eventually let you pet him while he eats.
