Most Christians fear Hell, which is fair enough, as it's hell, but this tends to be their main motivation for all the good they do. It may not be a direct link and I expect most christians would deny this as their primary motive, but as most good deeds are performed to avoid going to hell in the afterlife, could one not argue that basic christian guidelines are ultimately based on selfishness and the hope that the soul won't be eternally damned?
