Could I have deep vein thrombosis? No, ins., no $. Should I go to ER?

After a good long while of spending a lot of time on my butt, out of work, I finally got a new job. I've been on my feet 300% more than before for the past month and a half. I'm 26, 5'7", 128 lbs, female, and a pack a day smoker for 10 years. (I quit 4 days ago! hallelujah!) A month ago I started having this throbbing pain in my left thigh.
The pain was centralized mainly behind my knee for a while. The pain's maybe a 5 at most. It stayed for a day or two, went away, came back a few days later, etc. I haven't had it in a while, but it's come back again tonight after working 6 hours on my feet, then walking two miles after coming home.
I'm scared there's a clot that's break loose and kill me. Pretty damn scared actually. My life's just begun! I don't make much money, I have no money for a doctor. I can only just go to the ER and then owe them thousands and thousands of dollars......so I want to make sure it's important to go, before I go. I really don't want to go!

Please, someone with a lot of medical experience, please give me some clarity!
Thank you so much.
oh, this might be important...it was mostly in the back of my knee before, and it is now higher up, closer to the middle of my thigh, still kind of in the back.
