could i have a false negative HPT test result?

I went off of the pill about a month ago and experienced breakthrough bleeding. A little over week ago is when my period should have came and it has no signs of showing up. I've had pregnancy like symptoms for awhile now and have had unprotected sex since my breakthrough bleeding. I also have a very strong feeling that i am in fact pregnant along with a negative HPT.
Could i be experiencing a false negative?
 
Of course it is possible, the best thing to do would make an appointment with your OB to schedule a blood test to check your hCG levels, if you don't want to go for a blood test, wait 2 days and try again. Your hCG levels are said to double about every 48 hours and gradually increase until they peak around week 14 then they decline and level off. So if you test again in 2 days and it is still negative, I would wait 2 more days try one more test and if it is negative I think it would be safe to call it a negative. If you start getting a positive then the next is negative, I would say that warrants more investigation by getting in with your OB as soon as you can. Just to ensure it isn't an ectopic pregnancy or any other issues surrounding. But Good Luck!
