Could atheism ever be as intrinsic to culture as religion?

You know, can people be as united by their lack of religion as they can be under a religion?

Now there's plenty of sheeple even in the atheist/agnostic community. Usually around political party lines.

Actually in my area, there is a group of "free thinkers" that gets together quite regularly! Right now they are organizing a food drive to help out the needy in our community! :)

I'm sure there are some customs that could become a norm if these groups started popping up every where.

We're all different from each other and hell, would probably get on each other's nerves. We're best left un-unified.

More so. You don't need religion for culture. examples are music. art, language, science... need I say more?

and what standard of truth would you live your life by? mankind will never agree on any such standard, therefore what you propose will only lead to dissension among the ranks.

Atheists don't do "united". The only thing that even remotely brings us together is our mutual working to keep religion out of our laws. And even then, not often.

Perhaps not, but there are a lot of things that can just as easily unite a culture - doesn't have to be pretending to placate a fictional skydude.

Even everyone getting together to watch an episode of "Ow! My Balls!" would be a more productive use of our collective time and resources.

Only if the thought process were to become political, other than that, no. There is no Organized Unbelief with a governmental hierarchy like organized religion.

Seems like a really really difficult thing to "unite" under unless perhaps others are trying to force belief on them. And even then it sounds more like a matter of personal rights since atheism isn't a belief of any kind.

We are unique in our own way. That's the beauty of atheism. We are not sheeple.

you mean "united against those not like us" correct?

religion doesn't "unite" people it indoctrinates them and labels them.

slavery was so ingraned into american society at one point and so was treating women like chattel.

so i have hope that society can extricate itself from the horror that is religion one day.
