Could an tmobile person have an at&t phone?

I have at&t and have the samsung impression. I'm thinking about gettin the iphone but i was wonder if i could give my old phone to my friend who has tmobile.
Could that work, could she just put her sim's card into my phone and be able to use it. Or would that be a fail?
