coughing led to choking

i had a problem coughing for a couple of weeks with no other symptoms. i went out and swam in a lake and my ear was stuffed up for a while after i got some water in it. finally it went away and the cough was beginning to clear. now i rarely cough at all, but when i go i get this choking feeling and it's hard for me to catch my breath. it's really happened the worst in the middle of the night, waking me up. while not being able to breath i sometimes feel like i'm going to vomit and wind up after i catch my breath i'm burping a lot. i don't know what it is...post nasal drip maybe? anyone have an idea? thanks.

SounRAB like it could be reflux to me.

The most typical triggers of dry coughs are: PND, allergies, asthma and reflux.

Both the cough and belching are signs of reflux.

SounRAB to me like a corabination of GERD and Sleep Apnea (especially waking up in middle of night 'not being able to breath).

I have both - plus most likely pulmonary fibrosis, changed from dx of COPD from last pulmonary function test. Used to wake up in middle of night choking with 'burning lungs' and never knew what it was until I started having trouble swallowing several years later, and got diagnosed with severe GERD.

Then, after a round of pneumonias (18 in 4 years, 6 since Feb of this year), we started digging deeper, and discovered sleep apnea. At first, the pneumonias were dx'd as aspirant, but now docs think they aren't, because aspirant pneumonia doesn't clear as quickly as yours.::sigh:: It depenRAB upon who you talk to, however all three of these problems are interrelated - GERD can cause reflux = scarring; pneumonia causes scarring, smoking causes COPD and sleep apnea can cause pneumonias, too and scarring and...

Hope this helps!

well i really don't think it's GERD. i have no other symptoms. this just started very recently, like a couple of weeks. and i think it is nasal drip because i will cough a lot of phlegm up sometimes. it's like when i cough it will feel like i can't get air in and instead of breathing it into my lungs it's going to my stomach when i gasp. terrible feeling, but i think that's why i burp afterwarRAB - getting the air out of my stomach. any other ideas?
