For my engineering assignment I have to figure out the cost of designing and building a custom CPU for our own private organization.
Note: This is NOT for mass production, but simply for building a small amount (1-50) of CPUs.
How much would it cost to:
* Design the CPU
* Buy the machinery that builds the CPU (or build the machinery that builds the CPU_
* Components for the CPU
Since it is not 'mass production', there will only need to be enough machines for building ONE CPU (at a time), and the machines themselves can be very simple and doesn't matter how long it takes to produce the CPU. A Typical CPU fabrication plant produces about 25,000 CPUs per month, but since this is solely for the ourselves, we can allow 1 CPU produced per 3-6 months. There are no marketing, packaging, posting costs either.
Number of engineers (estimate) maybe around 10-20 to design and/or operate the machines that produce the CPUs.
Here are my estimates. Please tell me if they are plausible or not.
Simple CPU: $2M to $10M
Standard CPU: $10M to $20M
State-of-art CPU: $30M+
