Cosmic "fish nets" for clearing space debris - practical?

Done correctly, a single net might actually be able to clear its entire orbital path in a matter of days, if not hours.
A fairly easy way to dredge space with an eye towards reducing space junk is to launch a two-part satellite, sync its orbit up with that of any given cluster of space debris (including matching the speed of as much of the debris as it can), let it separate into two parts between which a hyper-durable elastic "net" of sorts is stretched, then just slowly slow it down relative to the debris. Naturally some debris would be travelling too fast relatively speaking, but enough of it should be going close enough to the same speed as the net to be caught up in it without causing the net to become unviably damaged.

The debris would be relatively easy to haul from there to one of the space stations or even to the moon where it can be sorted for anything useful (even just for recycling purposes).

Is this idea workable? :-?
