My 20yr old sister was involved in a car accident (drunk driver hit her) and she had her left leg amputated just below the knee. As expected, she hated everything about it to start with. Drs call the end of her leg "stump" which she hates also, so she tells everyone to call it what it is, the end of her leg. Anti-depressants are a god send, your girlfriend really should give them a go. But my sister has just been fitted with her 1st "leg" and has progressed from the wheelchair 24/7 to using crutches most of the time. She does have a relatvely positive attitude towards the future. Defnatly see if you can find someone to talk to your girlfriend (and a tip wouldbe to find someone very similar) as my sister spoke to a girl who had the exact same accident, exact same amputation and for my sister to see the girl DRIVE up the drive way, and walk into the house, was such an uplift for her... She refers to that meeting often, saying that she knows there is hope for her to drive and return to a normal life. If you would any more info i would be more then happy to ask my sister for you.
