Coping with amputation

My girlfriend was recently involved in a serious car accident and lost her right leg. At first we were told she may not walk again but now the doctors are hopeful that she may. She is really depressed after losing her leg and doesn't want to go out where people can see her. Has anyone been through amputation? Will her feelings change with time? Is there anything I can do/say to help her?

Being a recent amputee myself [right leg] I can relate.

Does she go to physical therapy?, to me that was the best thing to get you to see other people in the same or worse situation, you also have contact with people that have no handicap. Is she on anti-depressants?, they usually work quite well in this type of situation.

Her feelings will change. The best to say is something encouraging.

Best of luck.

Hi, yes she has started physical therapy but it is 1-1 so she doesn't meet anyone in a similar situation. She was against using anti-depressants at first but the doctor has suggested them again to her as she seems to be getting worse. I am hoping that her feelings will change when she can be fitted for a prosthesis. Do you use a prosthetic limb?

NeilJ: I still think that group physical therapy is the best for your girlfriend to get the social interaction that she seems to need.

I don't have a prosthetic limb, should be fitted before the end of the year.

Luck again.

my best advise is to join a support group, she will will notice an improvement in confidence and a desire to participate in outdoor activities. tell your friend it will take a sometime for some its months for others years. having friends who can relate decreases the time it takes to recover...
