Yesterday morning, my "low coolant" light appeared. I popped the hood and the coolant tank showed a level that was just at the "minimum" line.
The guys at the place I've been taking it tell me that it's not so much a leak as the system is "sweating" coolant and that I need to replace the heater core piping assembly at a cost of $300 ($120 for the part/$180 for labor).
I've spent significant money on repairs lately and really can't afford another $300.
I asked if the "leak" was where the piping assembly connects or if the part itself is damaged and if there is any way to seal the leak, rather than replace the whole thing. I didn't really get an answer to the first question. On the latter, I was told, "There might be, but I don't know of one. The whole system is pressurized and I don't know of a seal that can withstand that."
I am grateful for any thoughts about whether replacement is really necessary and if anyone has any good alternatives.
In the meantime, since it's not a true leak, I'm going to keep an eye on the coolant level and pray.
