Cool story: How I got my music in the garage.

I'm just sharing this as an example of the cool things you can do with your phone...

I'm a pretty modern guy, I have my entire music collection on a computer in my media room. SlimDevice's excellent Squeezebox/Slimserver combination serve up all my music joy. I was faced with a problem however...I have recently taken up woodworking and have been spending a lot of time on my bench in my detached garage. I thought it would be really nice to get access to my music while I work, but how?

Well it turns out that Slimserver has two really useful, lesser known features.
1) Even though it generally uses its own protocol to communicate with its clients, it also supports a standard shoutcast compatible mp3 stream available at
http://my-server:9000/stream.mp3

2) It has a nice slimmed down handheld web interface that is always available at
http://my-server:9000/handheld

So...in case you don't see where this is going... I went out and bought a cheap little radio for the garage that had an aux input (actually I bought a Tivoli Model One, which isn't even remotely cheap, but does have pretty nice sound. Not sure its worth the price though. But I digress). I then installed the Nokia internet radio client and added my slimserver to the playlist. So now whenever I want to work in the garage (which is fortunately within range of my wifi access point), I just plug my phone into the radio, launch the internet radio client, and control the server through the web interface.

Its not perfect - using the web interface while streaming causes some skipping (Slimserver is transmitting a 320kbps stream), but overall I'm quite pleased with the end result.

ps - And kudos to a smart fellow over on the slimdevices forums that pointed out it was possible to stream from Slmserver to an S60v3 device.

Very very cool, and exactly why I love this technology!

By the way, that Tivoli has great sound IMHO... I was playing with one at a store recently and was very impressed. Not as good as the old Tivoli's, the original amazing sounding radio of the 70's, but still very good.

The Tivoli was a bit of an impulse buy. I really liked the sound quality and loved the classic look. I'm having a little bit of buyer's remorse over the 100 beans I spent on it, but I'll probably forget about that soon enough...
