How do you cook rice without it sticking to the pan? I followed the instructions very carefully, but it didn't come out right.

Its depends what rice u r making & the quality of the rice . when u make pulao or ghee rice u have to put double quantity of water.

you need to use long grain rice. if you are using a rice cooker, rinse the rice really really good. Maybe 2-3 times. That means pouring water over it, and washing away that excess starch (white water).

Even if you are using the stove top method, rinse the rice good, and monitor the rice carefully and swish it around with a spoon if necessary.

Use oil/butter/margerine in the pan before you start cooking.

Once the rice is cooking, add some more oil to it to avoid the sticking once the water begins to dry out.

Fai!

Since your question is about rice sticking to the pan, and not sticky rice, I'll tell you what I do:

Once the rice is to a boil, put the lid on and turn the burner down to almost off, slightly below "low." The rice only sticks to the pan when the burner is too hot. Quickly stir twice during the cooking. It may take 2 extra minutes, but you'll get there, and the rice will be fluffy, and not stuck to the pan.
