Hi all! I'm planning my daughter's first birthday party, which will be held at the end of January. I'm considering cooking all the food myself in hopes of saving some money, instead of using a caterer.

I could use some ideas for a good winter menu. I have already put into consideration a big pot of chili with a side of corn muffins, as well as trays of veggie and meat lasagna. I will also probably do a big green salad. I'm just not sure if this will work well, or if I should go for other things.

What would you guys cook in the same situation (on a budget please)?

Melt a block of cubed Velveeta with a can of Rotel diced tomatoes and green chilis...melt on stove or in a crockpot to keep warm on buffet table...serve with tortilla chips.

We have chips and queso at almost every buffet...people really like it as an appetizer.

All of those that you mentioned were excellent ideas. I would make a large "something" that is "kid friendly" too like mini burgers, some finger foods and maybe some garlic bread for lasagna or bruschetta.

Also maybe some chips and dip (ya never know!)

The chili sounds great. Add some chopped onions, shredded cheese, and sour cream to the line up as well as some baked potatoes, and even a bag of fritos.

Lasagana is a great idea. Make a big old salad and have maybe 2-3 different types of dressing.

Stew in bread bowl is also good.

Even a nice meat loaf with mashed potatoes and gravy, and a green salad as well.

BBQ beef sandiches. Slow cook, then shred the beef or even pork or chicken. Lay out some burger buns and potatoe slad with baked beans. It is a nice versatile meal and can be winter or summer bbq style.
