Convince me why I should go Blu - ray?

But none of the blu ray fanatics have ever claimed that blu ray can make a crap movie any better. A crap movie is still a crap movie no matter what format you watch it on.

I have a blu-ray (PS3) and also a HD Upscale DVD player for my DVD's.

I noticed even upscaling was fantastic. The 2 disc Elm Street DVD on a standard player is fine, but upscaling is amazing. You can see Freddy's face clear as which I've never actually seen so clear in being a fan for 15 years!

So yeah Blu-ray or upscale is outstanding!

Bluray offers superior picture and sound quality .

Thats all you need to know

If you need further convincing then Bluray may not be for you.

Most people are not yet setup for HD audio but the HD picture quality that you will watch on your HD ready tv is reason enough.

I've got 2 dvd recorders and I use them as much as I did before I got Bluray.

Blurays can be bought inexpensively but it can take a bit of effort to find the good prices.

The High Street is a bad place to buy Bluray which maybe is why few people do

Damn right. Just because 'Battlefield Earth' comes out on Blu Ray doesn't mean that i'd buy it thinking that it might be better, if the film is devoid of anything decent to begin with then a nice picture and sound transfer wont improve that.

However, when 'Aliens' (my own personal favourite movie) comes out on Blu Ray i'll definitely buy it again because of the significant bump in picture and sound quality over the DVD. Arguably, it can make the film a more enjoyable experience to watch, because afterall Film is a visual and aural medium that you experience with the senses of sight and sound, so consequently improving the quality of picture and sound makes for a more enjoyable viewing experience. So technically what i'm saying is that it CAN make a good movie even better (in comparison to the DVD), at least from the point of view of the visuals and the audio.

I really don't see what's wrong with wanting to watch a film/TV show in the best quality available, and right now Blu Ray is the best you can get outside of a cinema.

I know....but I did`t word my post very well....My argument was more about how much 3D TV will be produced and broadcast.....Very little if any IMO....So that just leaves 3D movies on discs......and how many 3D films are the studio`s going to produce?

I went for it in a major way, to be fair.

Back in 2008, I picked up a PS3, a new hi def 37" flat screen tv and a 5.1 sound system.

These things are nowhere near as expensive as you think they are. None of my systems are what you would call state of the art, or particularly expensive, but I am extremely happy with the results I get.

I don't propose that you should go out and buy all your movies all over again. Some movies (dramas, comedies, older films etc) don't really benefit from the upgrade.

But for newer movies, especially those that benefit from good pic and sound, the results can be startling.

For example...Sherlock Holmes. That really rocks on blu ray. It has a very, very active DTS surround track, and a pin-sharp picture to go with it.

And there are certainly bargains to be had...a lot of major stores are doing offers on blu ray's and movie box sets...best I have come across so far in Band of Brothers for less than 20 quid...I paid nearly twice that for the dvd when it first came out! And it is stunning on blu ray...bullets and bombs whizzing around your living room, and incredible picture detail.

And please do make sure you pick up a few DVD mags and keep your ear to the ground as to what is being released, and what the general opinon on quality...especially on older movies. Sometimes they are barely restored or remastered for blu ray at all, and you should keep your money in your pocket.

But then there are restorations that will blow your socks off, such as Zulu, Blade Runner and Gone With The Wind.

Finally...PS3 is a pretty good option, certainly if you are a gamer like me. Had it nearly 4 years and it's always been very reliable, never had a problem.

The majority of products on the market have basic/normal standard and a higher quality level product, wether its clothes, food, cars even houses and we choose the level we're comfortable.

All cars basically function to do one thing: transport us from point A to Point B, but we have a choice at the level of comfort we want to travel in; A basic Ford focus looks pretty much the same as the top of the range but the level of comfort and trim increase depending on how much you want to spend..........some people are happy with the basic trim no frills models and some people want the car looking the best it can, alloys, full electrics, leather seats etc so they pay extra for it.

DVD and Blu-ray both do the same basic job - allow us to enjoy a film at home and some people are happy watching the more basic DVD transfer while some people want to enjoy it looking the best it can at this current time so they buy Blu-ray.

When it comes to cars I'm happy with my little city car, food i'll but a mix of own label and brand names............. Home cinema, I buy Blu-Ray.

this reminRAB me of a post from a few years ago, paraphrased below :

DVD - Over priced.
DVD - Over rated.
DVD - A rip off.

In DVD good picture and sound does not make a shit movie better or even a good movie great. It adRAB NOTHING new to the contents quality. For me VHS is just fine!. Cheaper too!. HMV think they are great with their DVD deals of 2 for

No ones talking about shit movies. Watching shit movies on dvd while saving money is not an argument. But if you appreciate film it makes great films and classics look better than you've ever seen them. Even good classic tv shows like Star Trek the original series are out in hd now as they were filmed using film originally. You can watch something like the wizard of oz in a level of detail no ones been able to see for decades and such. Theres always rental for the price sensitive, and comparing dvd to vhs's life span is a non starter. Tech used to be stagnant for much much longer, look how long people only had the choice of sdtv.

There have been several supermarket cheapies that can be hacked to play all regions of Bluray and they should be available on Ebay

The Curtis , Tevion and another brand I don't recall.

There are reports of these players having trouble with some discs.

The Curtis apparently will not play either of the Snow White discs although one cheapie player did get an upgrade to correct this fault.

If you want to stick to quality branRAB then best deal at the moment is
