Only recently seen this film.

Wow!

A wonderful, understated study of the human condition and how it is influenced by the science of the universe. Very intelligent, and it has much to say in the Creation vs Science debate.

Why was this film only marginally received by critics?

Superb story by Carl Sagan, and great acting throughout. While the special effects are good, they don't dominate the film, which so often happens in sci-fi flics.
 
a very underated film! theres many films out there just like that (if it aint big box office then the critics have there claws out, until when it comes out on dvd they then say what they really thought) guess thats just the film industry for ya! damn
 
Yeah great film, Jodie was superb as per....
I particularly enjoyed what she found when she reached the alien planet, it certainly wasn't what I was expecting.
 
It was a pretty decent film. I enjoyed the book more though. Much more technical in its concepts. The movie was dumbed down a lot.
Why was this film only marginally received by critics?
There were a number of flaws and inconsistencies that wern't present in the book. For example the cost of building the spaceship and launch pad ran into the trillions. Yeah right.:eek:
Also Jodie Foster tended to overact a little bit in parts.
The inclusion of Bill Clinton was a major flaw too.
