My sister and are considering renting a house together. She has 2 teenage boys 14 and 16. I get along with them pretty good overall but they are boys and that means they are messy and lazy. My sister is my best friend and we get along good but we are totally different. She is pretty laid back as far as household chores I on the other hand am a neat freak. Our styles are very different. She has the less is more attitude and I like having things for example she is fine with having 5 mix matched plates and I want a complete set of matching plates for about 8 (in case we have company). I like having all the things I need when I need them like an electric can opener she doesn't care if we have one at all.
Then there's the issue of rooms, bathrooms, rent and household bills. My sister brings in about $600 more per month then I do right now because I am laid off normally I make 2 times the amount she does but with the way the world is that may now be the case in the future. Our rent will be around $1100 per month. We are looking at 3 bedroom 2 bath, She wants the master room with bath and of course so do I. I would consider a smaller room and she can share her bathroom with her boys so that I can have the oher bathroom to myself, I would not be opposed to them using my bathroom if needed but overall it would be mine and I would allow guests to use it without problem. Since she will occupy the master and the boys will have the other room to share how should the rent be split?
How should the utilities be split?
I like doing yard work and am willing to take on that task with some help from the boys 1 day per month (keeping in mind that they will not be happy about doing it) how should I handle that?
How do you set up chores for each of us what is reasonable/unreasonable to ask of the boys? The 16 year old goes to school, works part time (20 hours her week) at a grocery store and then has DJ gigs Friday and Saturday nights, The 14 year old goes to school and watches TV, eats and #$@#%. I don't want to overstep my requests of them but I want them to clean up after themselves and be respectful of me and my things at the same time.
Any comments or suggestions are appreciated.
