Connect WiFi S60 with WiFi USB dongle only?

Is it possible to connect say a E70 through a WiFi USB dongle like this one http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1134691790190&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper ?

I'm a real n00b in WiFi stuff and don't have a wireless router. The Nintendo DS can connect with a (special) WiFi USB dongle, so I thought: maybe a WiFi phone can do the same? No need for me to buy a WiFi router then...

What is the USB dongle connected to? If it's a desktop or a laptop, yes, in theory the E70 should be able to connect in ad hoc mode. You'd have to set up some sort of internet connection sharing on the PC though.

Check out the All About Symbian forums for more detail.

Ow, maybe I should have mentioned: I want to Internet on a E70 through the Internet connection on my pc. So, I want to bridge the wire connection of my desktop to the WiFi connection via a WiFi USB dongle. But, might as well use it to stream mp3's to my device ones I'm home

connecting this to the data cable of the N70 wouldn't work.

Symbian 60 cannot run accessories like this. It can communicate with printers and external bluetooth keyboard, but only because those devices are made to operate alone. The printer can print and scan things without a computer controlling it.

The USB dongle there wouldn't operate alone, and would need a OS that can control it to tell it what to do. The N70 simply can't do that via USB.

I think the best chance there is to add wifi to non-wifi capable smartphones would be to find a WiFi device that has bluetooth to connect to. Bluetooth would be like a "bridge" and also signifies that the device is able to operate wifi alone.

I hope I wasn't too confusing

Cliff notes ------
No, that USB dongle won't work because you need to install drivers to operate it. Nothing like that exists for Symbian. Look for a bluetooth-2-wifi device that is self powered.

He may not be able to plug the dongle to the phone directly, but he can create an ad hoc wireless network by plugging the dongle into the PC, and letting the phone connect to that (via internet connection sharing).

oh a E70, I read N70 since I had in mind that he was talking about adding wifi to a phone

If you want to connect the dongle to your computer and make your phone access the internet through your computer, then the answer is yes, it can work

You can make your laptop act as a router, just like you could do that with a wired network.

OMG, it still isn't clear what I want?
Again: I have a E70 phone. This phone has WiFi. I want to Internet with it via WiFi. I don't have a wireless router (only have a cable modem) to share my internet connection with my E70. Instead, I want to use one of those WiFi USB dongles. Will this work? Can I use such a thing as an access point? No need to buy a wireless router then.

I don't want (repeat) don't want to hook up the USB dongle to my E70 (or something as insane as that). Just want to share my Internet connection with a WiFi dongle. Since bluetooth Internet sharing doesn't work with E70 (or other symbian phones) this is my only option for free wireless Internet on my E70, without the use of GPRS or 3G data traffic (@ home). I might as well want to use the WiFi connection to stream stuff from and to my E70 and pc.

If the answer is yes (which I think it is) my other question would be: What is (one of) the best dongles to get? What specs do I look at and what specs do I really need.

Yes, it will work, the guy above was just confused. Pretty much any dongle should work as long as it supports ad-hoc mode (I don't have a usb dongle, but I think almost any will work). Just set it up as ad-hoc, connect the e70 to it and do internet sharing in windows and it should work. The e70 supports 802.11g so whether the dongle is g/b is unimportant.

Hey man, I would like to know what happened then. Did you buy one? Did you manage to do connect to the internet by doing the connection below?

Wired router - PC - WiFi USB dongle - E70
