Confusion on using singular or plural noun in my essay, please help ^.^?

Hi, Im writing an essay about slavery. I have many sentences start with "Slave" as subject.
eg: "Slave had no power to resist"
Should I write slave as singular, or slaves as plural. In the sentence, I want that the subject refers to all slave in general.
