Just as bad though was 8 Out Of 10 Cats last week when Jimmy Carr said that the Internet was invented in 1990 by Tim Berners-Lee.

Just a small problem of using the wrong word. They should have said 'technologies' not 'inventions.'

Indeed ... The modern internet originated as ARPAnet in 1969, and Sir Tim Berners Lee invented
the World Wide Web in 1989, which went public about 2 years later. So the ad should say that
the internet is one the most important inventions of the 20th Century, not the 21st.

Oh, and I should point out a popular misconception you seem to have fallen foul of in your post.
The 21st Century actually started in 2001, not 2000 as most people wrongly seem to believe.

I actually agree with you but I quoted 2000 for convienience because,as you say,that's what the majority of people believe and if I'd said "the internet didn't exist before 2001" you can bet someone would have come along saying the century began in 2000 and then the thread would have descended into an argument over when it actually began.

Actually, you could say that the first century was from 0 - 99 AD.

You can't jump from 1 BC to 1 AD and miss out the zero.

But thats what the Gregorian calendar (our conventional one) did. 1BC went to 1AD.

Hence all the confusion over the decades. There was no year zero.

There wasn't a Gregorian calendar until 1582. Before that it was the Julian calendar.

You can't ignore the maths. 1 BC should be -1 AD.

When I was born, I was 0 years old, not 1 year old, so going from 1 BC to 1 AD is daft.

It is the first time the logo character was developed. Personally it is rather an obscure title for a company which hardly leaRAB you to believe that it dealt with insurance.

People confuse the Internet (capital I, it was disallowed on Countdown once for that) with the World Wide Web.
