Hi all,

Yesterday, I got my ExpressVu bill and in the enveloppe, I got a paper wich say that Bell ExpressVu will add soon (no date on the ads) TVA HD, TQS HD and RDS HD !!!

3 French stations that i didn't know they were broadcast in HD !!

Anyway, it's good for us, french Customer, because with that and with Astral Media, we will have almost all french Station available in HD (still missing Canal Z).

Youppi ! :)

Please stick with what has been confirmed. Discussions of potential new channels and rumours belong in the new channels discussion thread.

Discussion of channels not inlcuded in the announcement will be deleted

So is ExVuTechRep really workforbell or what? Reminds me of the whole westmanguy-nasacrfanatical fiasco.

That info was included with the latest bill client received, but there is no date for TVA-TQS-RDS HD in the info system reps have so we can not give you any dates

Speaking of 3 new HD channels... Where are MMor HD, National Geographic HD and Showcase HD?

Ya really, I'm going to be annoyed if they add another three French HD channels before adding MMor HD, National Geographic HD and Showcase HD.

There are no signs at the moment that any new hidef channels are about to go life - French, Show, NatGeo or anything else.
Even the announced BabyHD is not even in testing (but has a slot BTVHD).

Based on how Nimiq2 is filled up, I can't imagine how new channels can be introduced (while keeping the already not so generous
bitrate) without either removing some existing ones or switching to MPEG-4/8PSK and loading more channels per transponder.
Neither is likely within the next 6-9 months, I think.

They might drop the bitrate to under 10Mbps (PPV HD is often in this range) and go 3 HD channels per transponder -
the only way I can see to add new HD channels without adding capacity and/or replacing receivers. That would really suck.

Nimiq2 has some empty transponders (around 5, IIRC). But I thought those were the dead ones.

Ya, but are there not two satellites? I thought the point of parking two in the same slot, was so that the other could make up the dead transponders on the original (?) Nimiq 2.

-Mike

No, I mean right now. Did Bell not pair up an old DTV satellite with Nimq2 so they could use all 32 transponders?

-Mike

EV does have 2 extra sats parked at 91 and 82 to make up for the failures with N1 and N2. However, EV does not have lease rights for all the DBS transponders at 82. Now, if other space can be found for the services on those transponders...

Bell is already using all transponders on sat 91 (SD) and 29 of 32 transponders on sat 82 (HD). The max they can light up, even if they had 5 satellites parked at each orbit, is three more transponders. They are limited by international agreements to that amount of spectrum. So far, Bell hasn't managed to get 32 transponders online at 82 despite TWO satellites sitting in that orbit (the original got partially fried on launch).

Three transponders translates into 6 HD signals -- three already assigned to new French services, if and when. and that doesn't account for Showcase HD, National Geographic HD or the third movie channel from TMN in HD -- already available from some other providers.

Until new modulation or MPEG4 schemes get put in place (and your customer hardware swapped out), it will be a while before Bell gets over the current capacity crunch. Or they can start deleting SD channels (4 to 6 for every new HD). :o

I think they will try to squeeze 3 HD channels per transponder with existing MPEG-2/QPSK.
If they do, I hope it backfires.

I think that all 32 transponders at 82 are working. Like I said, EV does not have rights to all of them and some are locked out in the receiver firmware. At least, that was the case last time I looked. Until the second sat was leased and moved to 82, there were a number of unused EV transponders due to a power failure on N2. EV does not have 32 transponders available on N2. 29 sounds about right.
