Confessions of a Shopaholic

Apologies if this has been posted, I did do a search but didn't find anything :)

The Shopaholic books by Sophie Kinsella are my favourite books ever so was pretty excited to hear they were making a film....

Just seen the trailer, and as a huge fan of the books this movie is based on, I really don't know what to think... I'm actually pretty disappointed to be honest. I know films based on books aren't always gonna be as good as the book, but I dunno... the main character isn't even English in it!!

Loved the books, kinda hate the film already they have changed far too much for my liking.

1. ITS NOT AMERICAN!!! Why do they always do this would it really be that hard to shoot the film in London.
2. She has not only just graduated, she has been working at the financial times for ages.
3. Luke!! Wtf?? Luke is supposed to be this real powerful business man, who in my opinion is really hot, but the actor playing him looks like a child.
4. Isla is a nice actress and all but for me she just isn't Becky.
5. The rest of the characters do not look at all like they are described, i mean suze is blonde.
6. The plot, how much is actually following the book, apart from the fact that she likes to shop.

There is just so much more wrong with this film, but i'm bored of ranting, apart from all the things wrong with it it looks quite an ok movie.

I'm going to go see it today with an open mind ( i really like the books and am soo worried about the movie ) and just forget its based on a book and enjoy it becase despite all the faults listed in previous posts it does look like a goood movie.

i saw it yesterday and OMG!! what a pile!!! it resembles the book only in title and characters alone... i came out livid and wanting the screen writers head on a block..shame on Sophia kinsella for allowing them to ruin a fantastic story...

you will laugh (3 times at most for me), but if you loved the book as i did you will want blood when you come out!!!

I have never read the books but saw the movie yesterday. i found it really quite funny- much better than I was expecting :) The casting of Hugh Dancy was a good decision....:P

You've summed up pretty much everything I dislike about it! It took me ages to catch on who Luke actually was in that trailer! :o And yeah I think it'd be an okay film if it wasn't "based" on one of my favourite books!!

Think I'll wait for the DVD;)

I think I enjoyed it as much as I did because I hadn't read the books, I didn't even realise it was a book and that it was written by a british author :o but had been waiting for the movie ever since I saw the trailers, I absolutely LOVED it and it was just so much better than I thought it would be! Isla Fisher was fab and Hugh Dancy was nice to look at :D I guess the story was 'americanised' so that it would have wider appeal, anyway I give it a 9/10! :)

I can't watch this film for all the reasons gorgeous girl says. I love the books and can't watch the film ruin it.

Changing the location is just awful and as for Luke!! while I don't mind Hugh Dancy he is NOT Luke Brandon!!

It's not gonna be the same without Robin Askwith's cheeky chappie schtick, but I gotta say the addition of Isla Fisher is definitely a bonus!

I've read the book (got all of them at Christmas :D) and since seeing the trailer thought it looked like a load of rubbish, however my judgement was wrong..as usual :D
Although maybe not the best film, in my opinion, it was still enjoyable and and gave you a few laughs (especially the dance scene in Miami) and I think the casting was quite good. Though Hugh Dancy wasn't how I imagined Luke to look, that didn't stop him being quite easy on the eye ;)
The soundtrack was quite good as well and the outfits interesting (even if a little weird at times).
I'll definitely get it when it comes out on DVD :)

Having read all the books and seen the film, you really do need an open mind for the film, as it bears little resemblance to the books but it is funny in places.

It really anoyed me that they Americansed it - why?? Grrr.

Really disappointed to hear how much they've changed this. I loved the first 3 books especially and to change it this much is wrong. Why bother making it?

Suze is supposed to be an eccentric aristocrat dossing on the side at Camden Market. Obviously gone! Unless they make it Greenwich Market.;):D

The last couple of books went off the boil a bit but in the first Becky is a really endearing quintessentially *English* girl.

And I LOVE Luke Brandon! If they've made him a soppy new age Yank I'll be:mad:.

I love Luke Brandon too! He is close to my dream man!! apparently in the film Luke is British but is an editor of a magazine!!! surely the whole point of Luke is that he is a workaholic, self made businessman who struggles to switch off because his work is such a major thing in his life.

Isla Fisher is great but she isn't Becky. Also it looks like they have put in bits from the second book into the film.

I cannot watch the film, as the books were brilliantly funny, and this film will not do it any justice whatsoever.

Plus I can't stand Isla Fisher.

The plotline of the second book had them MOVING to New York. So she's already in New York? Or do they reverse that and have them move to London?! Oh I am confused!!:D

Oh jeez, an editor. He's a high flying brilliant financial businessman for crying out loud.

Should see Frost/Nixon Sat which'll be my first time in cinema for ages. Hope they show trailer.

Apparently its based on the first 2 books but i'm not 100% sure, i think the movie would do better if they changed all the characters names and not say its based on the book, because apart from that it seems it is nothing like the book. I don't get it why couldn't they just film it in london??

having read all the books and this thread, I don't think I shall bother seeing the film.
For one thing, how will they make shopaholic and sister? You can't relocate the lake district to the usa

exactly!! no they are already in New York..pretty sure the whole thing is set there but Luke has obviously moved from London to run this mag. I really dislike the image of Luke as an editor....changes him completely imo. If you do see the trailer let us know your thoughts!

Ok so even though i said i would hate it no matter what i went to the cinema with an openish mind and i LOVED IT!!! Ok so i hated the fact that it was based on one of my favourite books and they completely changed everything but as a film in its own right it was pretty good. However the whole thing with the manekins was really wierd.
