I got a new beta fish about a week ago, and he's got such a personality. He actually reminds me alot of a dog. If you walk into the room and look over at him, he's usually just chilling. But the moment he see's you in the room he starts swimming round and round, and often will swim back and forth and watch you as you do whatever. I talk to him alot, and out of any fish I've had he's got the most attitude, but it's cute. :)

For the most part, everything is going great with him. He's healthy, and active. And in about a week I'm getting him a bigger tank, some plants, etc. However I've noticed one thing about him and I'm not sure if it's a problem or not.

I read that Male Beta fish are not suppose to change color. However, if there is something wrong they might get rather pale, and if they are healthy they might get brighter.

When I got him, his body was a light peach color, as well as his fins. There was a few splashes of red on parts of his back fins, and a slight blue hue to his back area.

But in the last few days, I've noticed that he's changed colors. He's now a strange orange-pink-peach color, with a dark blue back that fades into black along his sides. His tail and top fin are also mostly dark blue now, and the red that was on his tail and bottom fins is bright like blood. The two tiny fins on his stomach are also mostly bright red now. And as each day goes by, more and more of his body turns dark blue instead of the orange-pink-peach color.

I'm not sure if this is a sign of a problem or what. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also, I read that there are some types of fish that are ok as tank mates for a male Beta, although it depends on his personality. He's never once flared up at anything, and isn't afraid when you go near the bowl. Infact he swims to the top if you put your hands near it. He seems rather calm, but I was wondering if there is a way to tell if he'd get along with another fish that doesn't involve sticking one in there and seeing if it works.

Thanks ahead of time. :)
Well like I said, I plan on getting a proper tank for him next week.

At the moment, he's in a tank that is maybe, about a gallon. Not much I can do there I know.

However, next week I was planning on getting a 20 gallon tank, a heater, filter, etc.
If I don't get him tank mates I was probably going to start a community tank with the 20-gallon, and keep him in a different tank (probably a 5-gallon one) next to the community tank. Although I feel a little bad if I do that because then it's like, 'Hey, look at all the fish in that tank together! And then there's you, alone.' :o
