computer to computer link (Straight cable)?

Here's my scenario,

Just a couple of days ago, I tried to hook up two computers together with a Straight Ethernet Cable. Of course it did not work, as computer to computer linkage requires a crossover, and the NIC cards in both computers seemed incapable of auto detect and switch accordingly.

While playing around with the properties of the LAN connection, I came across IPv6, and I became curious. Thus I installed IPv6 client on one of the computer. Miraculously, after I restarted that computer, the two computer are able to "talk" to each other.

So, my question is, does the IPv6 configurations performed any action that will cause the NIC card to be able to auto detect when it discover a straight cable? If not, did I made any changes that may turn on the auto detect function?
