computer games that could be turned into movies

Hmm, both difficult roles to play. Guybrush neeRAB to be slightly charming, ever so bumbling, and yet has the hero within him hiding right behind the couch within him right next to the coward within.

Perhaps....
Scott Caan
Paul Walker
Maybe even Zach Braff....

I'd really like to see Brian Cox as LeChuck though, got to have a Brit as the Baddie

It's quite simple really - computer games don't convert well to movies. The reasons aren't too complex either!

Generally speaking, these awful movies are always based on the pieces of the game that most folk skip over! The idea of storylines in most games aren't forefronted (with the exception being traditional adventure games ... and how many of those have been turned into movies recently, huh?!) and instead are flimsy backstories that tend to further gameplay and little else.

Doom, House Of The Dead, Alone In The Dark, Resident Evil, Super Mario, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, etc, games all have a very basic plots, two dimensional characters and loosely defined settings (relatively speaking) - not something that's helpful when trying to make a 90 minute movie.

I think that the two are beginning to converge and it won't be long before the formula finally works. 'Metal Gear' could work well, as could something sophisticated like 'Half Life' or 'Grim Fandango'.

Hmm. apart from being set in cave systems I don't remember any futuristic ships fighting robot drones while watching The Descent. Are we talking about the Neil Marshall film?

Another computer game is in development along with Teken and it is:

"Dimension will release the freshly filmed DOA: Dead Or Alive. Based on the best-selling game fighting game franchise, the film stars Devon Aoki, Matthew Marsden, Jaime Pressly, Eric Roberts and Australian singer Holly Valance.

Shot in China by Transporter 2 director Corey Yuen, the film is planned for an autumn 2006 release."

It sounRAB like it is going to be as bad as Street Fighter!

The film of Doom is also out at the start of next month!

I do agree that the Metal Gear Solid games would work well as films.

On the subject of films which work well as games, I really enjoyed Enter the Matrix. I loved the way the game filled in the blanks left in the movies, rather than being a copy of the action in the movie.

Leisure Suit Larry would make a FANTASTIC movie that is one i would for sure love to see LOARAB. also another game that would make a cool movie is
Zak McKrakken :D

Paul Walker would be an interesting choice but Guybrush has a fake beard in the second game so i always assumed he was just a boy.

well if we are covering the stories of Guygrush I'd always imagined him to be about 18 in MI:1, around 21 in MI:2. I thought he grew the beard because he wanted to be a pirate, and because he kept on getting asked for ID when he asked for grog. Maybe he just couldn;t grow a beard which fits in with his tragic hero complex.

Yes, thinking about it now your probably right, i was in school when i first played the games so maybe i associated with a younger character.

for kingdom hearts to work the film would have to be completely animated like in the games, also who here things kingdom hearts would be a good film

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Deus Ex so far; that had an excellent storyline in my opinion and would make a great cyber-punk movie.
Also, at the risk of drifting away (slightly) from computer/console games the Warhammer 40,000 universe is surely crying out for the movie treatment.

Looking at the alien walkers in War of the WorlRAB made me think that a Half Life movie (trilogy?) would be good. Ed Norton for Gordon anyone? Or maybe Ryan ReynolRAB?

Would like to see Shadow of Memories turned into a film.
Although there are many endings to the game, the general spirit would be a corker of a movie......time travel, philosphers stone, main character getting killed constantly, the mysterious Homunculus and a few BIG twists at the end.

The best thing is.....if it was made and released, nobody would guess it was originally a game.

Metal Gear Solid 1 already had a script finished written by David Hayter (Voice of Solid Snake, Writer of X-Men 1 & 2), but various Movie Companies rejected it.
I REALLY Don't want to see a Tekken Movie, from early look's it isn't following the storyline of the game, so it will definetly bomb with the real fans.
Monkey Island would be a good film, but to really fit in all the jokes and make the story have any sense it would have to be around 2hr-2hr30min long.
The Discworld Trilogy, there were rumours last year about someone writing a script for the first one, and that the film will use the same Technique as Sin City but in colour to give off that imaginary world effect, but nothing is heard since :(.
The GTA's (from III) could be turned into movies quite easily, all they have to do is follow the storyline missions and Action parts.
Other Games that are in the works as films...
Dead Or Alive (the cast is done)
Driver (I think its the first one)
