Computer Games into films

Can computer games now bemade into good films?

With CGI improving it seems since the Resident Evil franchise has made a success and the third instalement on its way proves me right.
We had some disappointments along the way, Streetfighter, mortal kombat etc.

What games should be turned into films and what where a waste of time?

Half Life 2, without a doubt. There's a cinematic feel to the whole thing when you're playing it, and to witness Gordon Freeman's journey from City 17 (the perfect movie setting), along the coast and back into the Citadel would make for a seriously good film.

Well, it would if the characters and plot are kept intact. I've seen more than enough victories of style over substance when it comes to reproducing games and comic stories as movies.

I enjoyed Mortal Kombat, but not Street Fighter.

Silent Hill and Resident Evil films have been competent, even though I didn't particularly like them.

The Half Life games are already movie like in story, the Thief games have a really interesting universe, and I'm sure there are plenty of RPGs out there that have good stories.

Also Clive Barker's Undying.

silent hill was the best game to film done
but i was so letdown with resident evil - it should have been the best i mean resident evil 123 are classic story games
and the movies turned them into trashy story games.

What do you mean? Mortal Kombet was a great film! The movie soundtrack was awsome too.

Doom was a pretty good attempt at the conversion. I want to see DOA, although a film version of DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball would have been better ;)

Going a bit retro, I think Elite would make a good film, although obviously it would have a running time of... well... infinity.

Mortal kombat could have been good but the sequel and tv show spoilt it.

Haven't seen DOA yet but will next week. I'll post my views in here.

Loved RE 1 + 2 and cant wait for 3. Think they have done well with a difficult story to please the masses who havent played the game. Thats the hard part.

LOL. You're on a slippery slope with that one ;)

Half Life definitely, starting with the first game and with Ed Norton or Ryan ReynolRAB as Gordon, Kev Spacey, Crispin Glover, or Hugo Weaving (!) as the G Man and Jon Favreau or Sam Rockwell as Barney. In IMAX 3D!

Streetfighter was superb.....surely Jean Claude Van Damme should have won an oscar.

And the dude who played the russian wrestler Zangief, with his legendary quote, as they are all watching the CCTV of a truck loaded with explosives heading straight towarRAB their tent:

Zangief: "quick.....change the channel!!"

Ahem....anyways, surely a Zelda film has to be made at some point!

Lol.

Adaptations of games are always not going to work - games are not books, they are non-linear and don't operate in the same way. Also game plots and characters are (generally) written by programmers not writers (although this is changing)

I can see an opening for films inspired by or set in the same universes as other games, but straight game-to-film conversions are bound to fail.

Having just played through Half Life 2, I have to agree that IF made very well it would make a great film. That's a big IF though! Film companies seem to have a habit of messing computer games up...

The best I've seen so far would have to be Silent Hill. I don't have much experience of the game, but I found the film enjoyable and the effects were pretty good, which is something that lets other game to film adaptations down. Need I mention the CGI at the end of Resident Evil??

Doom and Aliens Vs Predator SHOULD have both been great, but unfortunately the movie makers screwed both up. Especially AVP :(

The only decent game-to-film so far, in my opinion, is Mortal Kombat and Silent Hill. Story is laughable, but it's a good action film with great fights. Silent Hill isn't great, but it is genuinely quite scary. Also, the bad guys are pretty cool looking but the ending ruined it for me.

Tomb Raider wasn't terrible, but it could have been so much better...I personally think Lara Croft was mis-cast.

Street Fighter was...well, I won't even go there

Mario Bros was worse than Street Fighter

Doom was boring as hell

Dead or Alive was just plain stupid

Resident Evil was alright, but again, it should have been so much better.

Alien VS Predator was just plain crap

They should make Half-Life 2, Halo (though this could be a real Turkey)

What about the Metal Gear solid games? The first one (well the 3rd in series, but the first 3D one from the Playstation) would make a good movie, if directed well.

Metal Gear Solid 2 would make a ridiculous film, as the games plot was so ridiculous!

Anyone remember Wing Commander?

The games had halfway decent movie sections with reasonable actors like Mark 'don't typecast me' Hamil and Malcolm 'Clockwork Orange' McDowell.

If I recall the film went down market from there with some BH90210 reject. The only decent thing about it was that it had Jurgen Prochnow in it.

That was probably the most disapointing movie of all time! It was in the pipeline ('scuse the pun!) for so long, I seem to remember looking forward to it for literally years, and all the possiblities that the world of Mario on the big screen. The whole thing stunk from start to finish, and I still can't think of anything remotely like the game. After all, it's not like the game has much of a plot to speak of, so the whole joy of making a movie would have come from the visuals, you would have thought.

While Resident Evil was a good film, it's a shame they didn't make it anything like the games! It would have been good if they could have captured the disturbing creepiness of the mansion setting and the conspiricy plot of the first game (so you start out thinking it's zombies before you learn of the virus). Instead of going the horror route, they went for action, and like I say it was enjoyable enough but could have been so much better.
