So, I was recently accused of reading a user's e-mail. She's one of these followers of Eris whose sole purpose in life is apparently to sow discord by whining as loudly as possible to the highest-ranking personnel in our company about any little thing that upsets the delicate balance of her world.
We have a filter in place that scans incoming e-mails for virii, executables, suspicious attachments, spam content, and lots of other things. I designed the heuristics and continue to modify the system as Internet e-mail trends change. It works very well.
Several messages addressed to this user triggered the filter and those messages were quarantined for review. Now, we get hundreds quarantined every day, so I only go through the messages users tell me about.
Anyway, this dipshit starts forwarding to me the replacement texts and demands in each, "WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS MESSAGE? IT'S FROM ONE OF OUR BIGGEST SUPPLIERS. WHY IS THIS MESSAGE GETTING CAUGHT? YOU NEED TO FIX THIS ASAP!" I hate caps lock. It makes me want to cut this bitch's fingers off. She copies the whole freakin' world on the message.
So, I looked at the first message. It was from a vendor, all right. It was also about 1% business-related and the rest was about someone's surgical procedure and "how's your sister" and "we're praying for you" bullshit. Gosh, I wonder why this kind of shit was being filtered? Dumbass.
So, she sends me several messages in all caps demanding that I fix what's wrong; I'll tell you what's wrong, bitch: your definition of critical! So, I finally forwarded the messages to our HR administrator for review. I asked that he review the messages for business-related content and to let me know if I should loosen up my filter rules. He laughed. Good. So, I asked him to have a talk with this user.
The next day, I have about a billion messages on my phone from various management personnel asking if I was reading people's e-mail and why I would do such a thing and we need to have a talk and on and on and on...I was pissed!
I then had to take about three hours out of an otherwise productive day to, once again, explain to these managerial pinheads how the filter works, to remind them that they had requested the filter, to remind them that they had written the policy concerning information security and computer use (a fucking joke), and finally had to inform the whole management committee that I read e-mail only if someone asks me to in order to troubleshoot a problem; it's part of the job. I went on to ask why I would routinely read people's e-mail and what sense it makes to side with this user. They agreed. The last question was asked by the VP of Marketing, "Can you loosen up the filter for just this one user?"
Sure, buddy. No problem. That bitch is going to get every piece of spam the whole organization receives. Let's see how she likes that. Hail Eris!
