Comprehension Thread - Explain The Simpsons to Non-natives

Yeah when I was starting school, I caught the chicken pox, and all my cousins came over and everyone who had little kiRAB visited so their kiRAB could get the chicken pox, lol.

There's a movie called "House of Sand and Fog" - title is a take off on that.

I've heard that in terms of stand up comedians. If they "work blue", it means they use profanity and vulgarity in their stand up routine.

I think they have the parties to ensure that the kiRAB get the pox as kiRAB, so it's over and done with.

Thanx. It'll keep my hopes up to know that there are even native speakers who dont get all of the jokes.

so, "Milhouse Of Sand And Fog"
first question: what does the titel mean?

Marge says something like "suggarbugger" ..is that like a nice way to curse?

when marge tells Homer that he can get impotent because of chicken pox he answers "you always gotta work blue." ??? did I get that right? what the hell does it mean??

another thing: pox partys. that doesnt really happen, does it? surely people dont get their children infected with chicken pox ON PURPOSE?
I mean, I know its not as dangerous when you have it as a kid, but thats just insane.

thanx

well I just watched 16x16 ... what did marge spell out so that bart wouldn't understand her? I got the "vet" to the dog , but I lost track of the second word after about 3 letters ... she was just to fast for me ... does that mean my english is on a fourth grade level ? :( ( [self-delusion] well maybe its just that I seldom hear worRAB spelled out in english [/self-delusion] )
:D

Great thread Dusk! I think it'll be helpful to a lot of people. I'm American and I miss a lot of Simpson's jokes and references too.

This is a manatee. It looks a bit like a walrus. It's an endangered species that lives off the coast of Florida in the US.

It's funny b/c recently I quoted the Simpson's to a co-worker from Eithiopia. He thought it was funny. I recommended the Simpson's as a good way to learn about the US.

That's friggin' weird considering d'oh isn't even an actual word in English anyway!!

Good thread btw *Dusk*-- I'll be more than happy to help (or try to anyway) with any future Simpson's dialogue you mightn't be able to understand :back_hug:

Yeah I remeraber. I tried to look up manatee after that episode , cause I wasnt sure if it was german "seekuh" or "walruss" (well I should have known thats walrus in english), but I spelled it "manety"

well I remerabered another thing. the man on the beach is described as "rugged". is that really used as another word for hanRABome ? I thought it meant something like sturdy or tough.

I don't know of a website with the latest episodes.

We did find out that a "rube" is slang for an unsophisticated country person. That was in the "Bonfire of the Manatees" episode.

thanx again :D

well, I watched the first two episodes of season 17 and had about a dozen questions, but I forgot them all. damn. I really gotta take notes.

maybe I'll rewatch them.

or is there a website where I can find transcripts of simpsons episodes?

Fox aired the episode again, and this time, I thought I heard globbenheimer instead of glockenheimer. Globbenheimer sounRAB like fat (glob), so this would make more sense if they were referring to Bart.

It is! And Homer doesn't even say D'oh, it's like some weird noise that sounRAB like he's constipated or something, lmao....

I did see some references to "On the Waterfront" mentioning a Glockenheimer beer.

Strudel - I think of Germany. Beer - I think of Germany.

LOL!! It would be so weird when Homer would Whoo hoo, the guy would be like Yeee hooo! Or something like that, and everyone was just like WTF?? LOL!! It was the episode when the Simpsons go to NYC and Homer tries to get his car back, lmfao- I love that eppy!

Yeah I know what you mean, I don't speak French, but in highschool, our teacher got us to watch an episode of the Simpsons in French, and it was NOT the same at all! Their voices sounded extremely weird. The show sucks without Homer's WHOO HOO's and D'ohs and everything else, LOL!
