Barry,

to me 3 -4 lbs doesn't seem like very much compared to 1,000 sq ft. Without knowing exactly what the compost manure is, it's hard to say, but if I were using "fresh" manure, I'd still spread it in like 3 - 4 lbs per 100 square feet. I'd work it in really well, and let it stand for at least a week to ten days. Then work it more and then water it. The watering will leach some of it further into the ground.
I would think this would be appropriate for an area that had been used for gardening for several years where the soil had not had any amendments added during that time.

This is for a vegetable garden that has been used for a few years. Not sure of the level of nutrients in soil. Just looking for a ballpark figure.
