Completely Confused!

For the past year and a half I have been having all kinds of health problems. I'm a 26 year old woman with no history of illness, so this is just weirding me out.

It started with severe headaches, not migraines, that my neurologist diagnosed as muscular tension "migraines". Basically stating the the muscles in my neck and shoulders get too tense and I get a headache. I was sent to physical therapy and a chiropractor. The physical therapist was aweful and didn't help, but the chiropractor was great and has significantly reduced the headaches.

Several months after the headaches started I also began getting a stuffy nose. It was mostly a night and would work itself out throughout the day, but then lasted longer and longer to the point where at least one of my nostrils is stuffed up permanantly. The stuffiness switches sides and changes in intensity, but for no discernable reason. I've been tested and proven negative for every allergy imaginable, no allergy medications or steriod nose sprays help, and the saline rinse just dried my nose out. No doctor can explain why my nose is stuffed up the way it is.

On top of this all I've been feeling incredibly run down and tired and have been having really severe joint pain. My shoulders and hips have been popping and are incredibly sore. I was given a bunch of blood tests and was found to be B12 deficient and was told to take B12 vitamins, and then sent back to physical therapy for the joint pain. The same bad physical therapists and I decided to switch to one outside of my healthcare coverage which is much better and has helped the shoulders, but the hips feel worse.

I was sent to a physical medicine doctor (?) and he said I had bursitis and a muscle sprain, which doesn't sound right considering my pain feels like deep bone pain (like growing pains almost). He refused to give me an MRI and only gave me xrays, which he won't show me. He says everything is normal and wants to give me cortisone shots.

Basically...All the problems I've had in the past year and a half have been compartmentalized and I've been sent to everyone, but I've been thinking that they must be linked somehow. How does so many things happen at once and have them not be related?

Any ideas of what could be making my muscles and joints hurt so much to cause the pain and the headaches, and what with the vitamin deficiency and the stupid stuffy nose that won't go away?

I'm just completely confused!

You might want to investigate the possibility of lyme disease...the headaches, the popping joints, and the vitamin problems are symptoms that some people with lyme present with.

Yes, it does sound like the beginning of an autoimmune disorder. You could see a rheumatologist for that, it might be a good idea to have your family doc check your thyroid as well.

The "growing pains" bone pain you describe could be a vitamin D and/or calcium deficiency. Does it ever feel like your toes or fingers are curling up? (carpopedal spasm)

Chronic stuffy nose might be caused by an airborne fungus. A study done at the Mayo Clinic found that a common everyday fungus called alternaria caused an exaggerated immune response in about 90% of patients with chronic stuffy nose. They recommend nasal irrigation and antifungal medications. Check your home for hidden mo:Dld just in case.

"He refused to give me an MRI and only gave me xrays, which he won't show me. He says everything is normal and wants to give me cortisone shots." The x-rays are yours by law, you will have to pay for the films 12$ to 20$ each, but they're yours. He has no right not to show them to you and it's unethical for him not to explain his diagnosis. And if you we're "normal" you'd hardly need cortisone. Grrr:mad: bad doctors really irk me.
