Compatibility Issues

I am currently on a Verizon family plan. I had the LG Chocolate phone but recently lost it and am looking for a cheap replacement. Two older phones I had sitting around were an LG VX6100 and a Motorolla V710, and when I tried to active them I was told they were too old and thus could not be activated. Apparently if I downgraded my plan (which is not an option) they could be activated, and I tried two operators and neither seemed all that knowledgeable on the issue. What is the deal with this? (sorry if I sound ignorant)

So I'm thinking to buy a phone off ebay but am wary, first of phones with ESN's that won't work, and second with whether or not it will be compatible. The operator could not tell me whether specific models would be compatible without an ESN to check, all she told me was she knew the list of phones on the site would work.

A couple I am looking at at the moment are the LG VX8100, LG VX8300, and the Samsung SCH-A950. Any idea if these will work? Any info on this issue would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.
