Comparison Review of Four New(er) Nokia S60 Phones: N80, N73, N93, E61

Good Review...

But well, scores on phones is really subjective.. It depends on the person.
I personally would rate 10 STARS OVERALL for N93!

It's true that N73 has slightly better camera.
But it doesn't have wi-fi, BT 2.0, new faster processor, and land-scape mode.
BTW N93 is not that bad in camera. It's decent. It even has the best vid-cam.

I don't know if E61 has a better wi-fi range reception (but i believe in you ^^)
Still, no match for N93. BT 2.0, Faster processor w/ discrete GPU, Cam and Vid-CAm. A slight wi-fi strength difference? It doesn't really matter.

N80's smaller. But camera's really suck. It's low quality 3mpx Cam.
About signal. N93 certainly does bad job.
But it's not 0!
I mean compared to N80 who get 3.0 That's unfair.
It depends on your carrier and where you live.
In my college (sxxxxxxxx), my friend's cingular N73 has a hard time getting signal in the student's lounge.
Mine's t-mob is doing OK.

Now i don't say that N93's perfect.
The problem with it is: THE PRICE!
It's way up high.. This is what N93's BAD at.
But if it price 550-600$$ Today, it certainly is a 7 STAR! or 10 STAR!!

I don't think you get it. In Olly's case, it doesn't matter if you have a phone with 850/900/1800/1900+1900/2100UMTS. If your provider only has licenses for 1900 and no roaming agreements, then that's what your stuck with.

This coming from the same guy who doesn't know how to update his Nokia's music library. What a moron.

P.S. Name two phones, that are currently for sale, that only have 1900.

I have to say this review is meant to be informative for people that are planning on buying an S60 phone therefore I have to agree that the fact the N93 phone lacks the 850mhz compatability should be mentioned, even though it is not available in your area, it is in place in many cities and peoples decisions should take this into account. I for one would consider the N93 however the lack of 850 is a dealbreaker...

People need to relax around here and stop jumpin down peoples throats.... your arguing about CELLPHONES....jeez

Oh and great post! Very informative

Once again, it depends on the person.

I personally like the size. It's not heavy, not too big for me.
What i like the most from the design is the keypad.
It's really good for people who has long/big finger (ME!)
I can't type well with sny ercsns.

It's also good for a gamer (landscape gaming).
In landscape mode, the keypad's like a game stick/controller (comfortable).

if you have a provider that doesnt have roaming agreements then your with the wrong provider. I have to agree with JP.....if your doing a comprehensive review of phones that are intended to be used in NA then a lack of 859 is without question worth mentioning. If you have a phone that can not offer you coverage everywhere there are GSM towers then that must be considered when purchasing the phone. I'm not sure how tmob is in the western part of the US but here in the D.C. market tmobile customers roam on cingular while deep indoors and when they walk outside they jump back to the 1900. I'm not sure if the 1900/850 phone ditches the 1900 sooner than the 1900 only phone but it appears that in SOME urban areas, 850 is once again a necessary evil. 2 years ago a tri was semi functional in my area but now I wont even get a single bar in my house on a 1900 where I get a full signal with any 850 enabled phone. Tmobiles coverage and signal strength in the d.c. market is so bad that years ago I was forced to ditch them for Cingular, and I hate Cingular with a passion.

Huh, could it be that the N93 has crap reception on T-Mobile's network is because it's the only phone listed without 850mhz?

It's not even in the same league as the rest and this should be noted.

When will ppl realize that T-Mobile is embracing the crucial 850mhz band and allowing roaming on Cingular's network in accordance with this.

Thx for the review, I was close to doing something like this with my N73 Music Edition / E70-2 / Sony Ericsson K790a

(and who said SE is garbage lol? what a noob...)

@JP: Considering that T-mobile has exactly ZERO 850 licenses in the Seattle area, your example is bunk. The n93 did ****** because its RF sucks. Maybe do some spectrum research before busting out the 850 fanboy crap, hmmm? All of these phones were on 1900mhz, end of story.

I don't think you get it.

T-Mobile USA roams on 850mhz...nuff said.

And I do know how to update the Nokia music library, wtf are you talking about? The way Nokia updates it is retarded, takes 5 minutes or more to update almost 2gb worth of music while Sony Ericsson is practically instant. Who's the moron? I'll let you sleep on your little question there....

Comparing a 1900mhz only phone to three 850/1900mhz phones on reception in North America......on a provider that owns 1900mhz and roams on 850mhz....and then give the 1900mhz only phone a bad review on reception in comparison to the 850/1900mhz???? How ****ing stupid is that? GOD, why are you doorknobs even trying to argue this?

....probably the same types that argued 850mhz is irrelevant...(and then quietly stfu'ed when T-Mobile started leaching off their competitions' 850mhz spectrum)

oh and i wil add that Tmo has no roaming agreements here either, in case thats a question. This was a 100% 1900mhz test.

I get better reception with my 6630 and E60 than my friends with their 850mhz Motos and Samsungs. I guess that's not the case everywhere, but i never had any reception issues and i never used 850mhz phone.

;8387200']ive used 3/4 phones in your review... i dont think ill be using the n93 anytime soon, its just not the phone for me, its huge and i really think its one of the ugliest phones ever made, but thats just my opinion

n80 is a nice phone, but i agree with that macro button i was basically cleaning it every day... its a nice phone, i did not find it to be that thick, and when the slide was closed, pretty much one of the smallest s60 phones ive used when comparing to previos giants in 6600, 6630, etc... i bought it when it first came out, and wifi did not work at my school, so i ditched the phone... oh, and horrible battery life as well

e61, i had it for a couple days before i sold it... the qwerty keyboard is nice, its much better then the SE m600 where they have 2 letters button mapped to the left and right side of each key, THAT is like, impossible for me to use, i can text with a normal keypad 100x faster... the full qwerty is the only other solution imo, and the buttons were nice, screen was nice and wide, you dont need to turn the phone sideways to watch videos in landscape mode!! i think thats the first phone ive ever used that you dont need to do that, quite impressed... its a little too wide, long phone conversations get tiring because of the phone's width, i find myself pressing the phone on my shoulder as its more comfortable that way lol... too bad its missing a camera, and if they can somehow cut down the width a little, without tampering with the qwerty design, the phone would be a must have

i am currently using the n73 me, it reminds me alot of the n80... kinda like, the n80 and k800 had a kid together, but the wifi didnt get passed on... im amazed at the speakers on the phone, dual speakers on top and bottom, i work in a semi noisy environment and not allowed to wear headphones, the music is able to play through machine noise which is definately a plus... camera, although slow as hell, is nice... very nice... the rest of the phone, as stated, is basically the exact same as the n80, with the battery life and reception improvement... 3 hrs or so of loudspeaker mp3 playback on full volume, and only one bar of battery life lost... sexy

one thing i have to complain about the n73 is perhaps its build quality, i have dust under my screen, and dust seems to get into the phone very easily... when in the dark, light leaks out of the sides of the keypad, making me think that dust would get in there if light can come out, which is indeed true... ive never seen a phone that leaks light out? bad on nokias part... now i have to find a way to take off the faceplate and clean my phone

;8387244']a note on the n73 me mp3 player vs the older mp3 player on s60v3...

when you upload songs, the mp3 player will do a refresh for you automatically, the lazy refresh, and theres no option to do a hard refresh... the lazy refresh only adds new songs to your playlist, and does not update changes made on specific songs such as artist, title, album, etc if the song was on the list previously...

this is not a problem, but i have songs in other languages, that if typed incorrectly, is just a bunch of random letters and symbols... gets pretty annoying for me, the "older" mp3 player on s60v3 i believe had a hard refresh button? i think on the e61 for sure... a solution to this is to take your mini sd out, update your mp3 list, put ur memory card back in, and do another refresh... with a 2gb card, that takes like what... 3-5 min to refresh? lol

other then these minor glitches, i really like the n73 and plan to use it for a long time... but seriously, if it had wifi it would be the perfect phone for users like me, i dont have a data plan since they cost an arm and a leg here in NA...

nice thread olly, I was wondering when i would see some of your impressions of the E61, glad you like it.

i found the E61 to be slightly below other nokia's in the reception department on 850 here in WI on cingular. my low reception test is at my parent's house and the E61 could not hold a signal unless i kept it screen down the whole time. the 6131 and the 6620 have no problems holding the reception. other brands don't do so hot in my experience.

from the sounds of it, the E61 does better with the 1900 reception.

the N80 comes in tomorrow so i should be able to see how it performs on the 850.

Got to go with JP here. This is all market dependant. Many people in the d.c. area swear up and down that Cingular is the worst and offers no coverage and another group will argue that Verizon is not what they claim to be. Most people travel, live, and work within the same area day in and day out so their perspective on signal strength will always vary regardless of the handset......but the one certainty is if you need a specific frequency and your phone doesnt have it...Ur FD!

i'm definitely enjoying it, curiouis to see what you think of the n80!

-olly

Exactly. This is all market dependent. TMobile does not roam on 850 EVERYWHERE. It is only in some markets.

Getting back to the topic:

1. Olly acknowledged that in HIS MARKET, TMobile does not have 850 roaming coverage. If we look at TMobile's coverage map, we can see that it doesn't. Makes sense to me, since it doesn't make sense for TMobile to pay another provider for roaming agreements in an area where it has native coverage.

2. JP said that TMobile has 850 roaming coverage in the US.

3. Make sense of what you wish. Just hope this clarifies some things.
