Compact Flash care compatibility?

I have a Nikon Coolpix 5700 and have been using a 1 GB flash card in it. I just purchased a 4 GB flash card and when I try to format it, I get and "Out of Memory" Error. Is this an size limitation on the camera itself or is there an issue with the Compact Flash?

That camera came out in 2002. It therefore does not support SDHC cards. Any SD card over 2gb will be SDHC. It's an issue with the camera.

I don't believe this camera will use COMPACT FLASH or MICRODRIVES greater than 1GB in size.
