Commuting to work by bicycle?

I am thinking of buying a bike to use for commuting to work, never done it before, so will need to build up the use on the bike first so I dont keel over on the first day! Please could you recommend a good quality, comfortable bike for a lady that wont break the bank. Many thanks.
Thank you all very much for your help and support. I think I will go and try them out. At the moment I see myself only as a fairweather biker, but I do hear that you can 'catch the bug' and end up doing it all year round.

I've been looking as well.
Someone recommended Pashley as they are comfortable and well made. Quite old fashioned looking, a sort of "sit up and beg" style rather than one where you lean forwards over the handlebars.
I thought they were expensive though.
I was also told that a bike with small wheels is easier for a novice to ride.
