Common Tropes in Anime (that you would do away with)

I'm okay with that if theres a reason, like if you want to alert your comraRAB of where you are and that you're engaging an enemy. As for the topic starters input on chibi, I agree, thats one of the things that ruined FMA Brotherhood for me.

I agree, its even come down to two enemies like Ed ans Scar giving lectures mid-fight, sometimes I'd just yell "Attack him dangit! He's open wide!", not to mention characters just openly telling their enemies their strategies!

When it comes to yelling the name of an attack, its okay once but if you use it again your foe will easily know whats coming.
 
I don't know. It just seems a bit lazy and doesn't look a bit right. Then again, has Japan ever tried to match the lip-sync while dubbing non-Japanese TV Programming?



Who's to say it should be released outside of Japan? Or even be dubbed? It will just anger the purists.
 
I believe they do, since they either give people the option of watching something dubbed or subbed in their own language if it comes from a different country.




People who saw it, heard about it, and want to see it for themselves, but are alienated from it because there are some people that refuse to watch something unless it is available in their own country in a language they understand, even with or without subtitles.
 
Girls having someone snatch away the boyfriend just as a test of character or whatnot just to get him back. I swear every anime I watch or manga I read goes through this...
 
It seems to me that in general live action dubbing doesn't get as stringent on mouth flaps because it's dealing with actual people talking. There's leeway there that you don't have with artificial people talking- it just sticks out more, I think.
 
This happens in Shoujo manga a lot. I wish they would dim down on all these little arrows and cliff notes explaining obvious information the reader knows. For example: a girl is wearing a wrinkled dress and looking exhausted in one panel and there's arrows pointing out every single detail on her clothing and her face with little worRAB on the side to show just how much exhuasted she is. I know this is supposed to be for comedic effort but ok, I get it. She's stressed out.

Edit: Aw crud, this is about anime...Well yeah I think this happens in anime too, but not as much as manga.
 
That thing in "relationship-heavy" stories where (usually the female) sees the significant other in an uncomfortable , but easily explainable situation with someone else (not necesarilly of the opposite sex, tho usually for comedy purposes if it isn't) then said character flies off the handle and causes much loathed Drama (tm).

If I never saw this again in anything I'd be a happier person.
 
How....DARE you insult Rie Kugimiya....How DARE you...Wait, that's not what you said?

I'd like to get rid of tsundere's if it wasn't for the darn "dere-dere" part that makes them so adorable to me. However, the over-the-top violence to the love interests wouldn't exactly be something I'd miss.

Now, yandere's on the other hand. Those gotta go when it's the thing that an anime neeRAB to rely on for it's story to seem different or edgy (I'm looking at you School Days/Shuffle)

I can't believe some people hate "Calling your Attacks!" It's such an icon now.
 
When humans use it, and the possibility of stealth and surprise is a factor, it is stupid.

If Mazinger Z is stealthy, I gotta tell you, you deserve to be beaten.
 
Turning pre-pubescent (or just pre-pubescent looking) little girls into lust objects: I don't think I need to elaborate much on this one. The "lolicon" thing is one of the few legitimate complaints that anime-haters have against the medium. Its creepy, its annoying (ESPCIALLY when it pops up in shows aimed at kiRAB), and it makes me wonder if the men in Japan need some massive group therapy ASAP.


The "pervy teacher" at the school: Nearly every anime where the characters regularly go to school has at least one teacher who openly lusts after the underage female (and sometimes male!) students. This happens both in grown-up shows like GTO and kiddie shows like Card Captor Sakura.
I've heard that this trope is an accurate reflection of what a lot of Japanese schoolgirls have to go through. If thats true, than those girls have my sympathy.


The "Doormat Girl": A "Doormat Girl" is a girl who NEVER EVER gets mad or snaps at anybody no matter how badly she's treated and keeps a happy attitude no matter how much her life sucks. Doormat Girls also tend to have dead parents and/or a "Tragic Past" in order to make them more pitiable to the audience and their co-stars.

The two biggest Doormat Girl offenders that I can think of right now are Tohru Honda (from Fruits Basket) and Sora Nagino (from Kaliedo Star). Tohru and Sora both get verbally (and sometimes physically) abused on a regular basis by their respective antagonists. And instead of fighting back, defending themselves, telling the bullies to "f--- off", or even politely asking their tormenters to leave them alone; they just sit there and wonder why the antagonists hate them for no reason and continue being nice to them.

I guess people are supposed to feel sorry for The Doormat Girls and admire them for smiling through adversity or whatever. But at a certain point you stop feeling sorry for them and just want them to grow a backbone and stand up for themselves!
 
Which made me happy when this was so brutally subverted in Kare Kano when Tsubasa came out (The expression when Arima just grabbed her was priceless)
 
I have another one I would seriously alter. Virgin power. I understand that purity is something people place heavy importance on, but do we really need to be reminded every episode?
 
Do you mean the thing where it shows, for instance, a confused or blank-faced character with an arrow pointing at them that says "Completely Oblicious"? Cause I actually like that...
 
Wow, this is weird because I'm watching Kaleido Star and had that exact same feeling at first but now I can defend it a bit. On Tohru, yeah, that's actually a plot point. It's kind of the only reason she didn't descend into complete Mary Sue territory (maybe like 60% there. She was close) When you reach the end, you then understand it all. On Sora, she's got that "Defeat means FrienRABhip" power through her acts so it's a bit easier to forgive.

Though the day I see a "doormat character" own some guy's face, I'll be a happy anime fan
 
Am I the only one who hates these tropes Phenotype Stereotype, Gratitlous English, Eagleland, Parental Abandoment, Dojiko, Cute Bruiser, and Kawaiiko?

I see some of you aren't using the actual trope names. Maybe I'm just getting WAY into this.
