I've heard a few good artists in commercials, but I don't think I've ever started listening to a musician after hearing a song in an advert. To be honest I felt a little dissapointed when I heard The Dodos in a Bud Light commercial, actually the first thing I did when I saw that commercial was yell "FUUCK!".
 
Whenever I'm at my computer I usually have my TV set muted or pretty low with a ball game playing. Occasionally though I'll actually take my headphones off for a bit if there's a good show on or something. Sometimes a commercial will come on and I'll hear a song in the background and be like, "Wow, holy crap! That sounRAB amazing! I wonder what that is."
Then I'll turn back to my computer and look it up on yahoo, and I'll find a pretty cool artist I didn't know about previously.
A couple examples of artists I've learned about just through commercials:

Incredible song. First heard this on I think it was a Honda commercial 4 or maybe 5 years ago. Fell in love with it instantly.

I found out about Matt & Kim because of that commercial for I think it was Bacardi? Don't remeraber but it was the song Daylight.

Shiiiiiiiiiit, this thread reminded me of this car commercial from about a year ago, that had a really awesome song in it. I think I even made it my myspace song for a bit? Not sure. But now I can't think of the song and it destroying me, inside to the out. I mean, killing me. I wish this thread was never born.
 
Can't say I've ever discovered an artist because of a commercial, but that's not to say I've never heard a commercial in which I found the music appealing.

Here is a fine example. I saw/heard this commercial many times when it was new and loved the special effects, the chick, and the music. I never bothered to check who the musician was. Later on, I happened to get into Dabrye and recognized the song while listening to his album.

I notice now alot of the time, Justice songs are in adverts. I find it pretty awesome. I think Justice are the only ones who I've recoqnised. :)
 
^ Yeah it's weird, I've been noticing that too. I think I also remeraber hearing Waters of Nazareth from another commericial before as well.
 
Was thinking about this and came up with a few more for me.

A few years ago there was some a series of Heineken adRAB where it just showed a green bottle in the middle of your screen with neon lights flashing all around it.

- One of them introduced me to the Pussycat Dolls with a remix of Dontcha. I'm not a big fan of theirs now or anything, but the remix on that ad was incredible...so upbeat, and like a zillion times better than the album version. I've looked for it everywhere and never been able to find it. D:

- A second ad in that Heineken series introduced me to Galvanize by the Chemical Brothers:

I'd heard of them before of course, but somehow had missed this song until I looked up this ad. Legendary tune. (I'd never seen the video for this till just now either..I kinda like it :)


Finally...7 or 8 years ago I remeraber there was a Coca-Cola ad with a rave going on in some forest. Lots of weird **** going on and red lights flashing everywhere. This ad had a very upbeat, techno sounding song that I kinda liked, so I mentioned it to a friend who was into that kinda music the next day and he told me who they were. This was my introduction to Basement Jaxx. :thurab:

It was this poppy, I want to say folk song by this solo artist. I want to say it was a car commercial, but it could have been for a gas company or something, I just remeraber cars in it.
I even broke down and texted this girl I cut ties with about a year ago to see if she could help me. Cant stand when I can't remeraber something.

Now as of like 2 days ago all of a sudden it's playing every time I turn around again so I had to go look it up.
Turns out its an old Biz Markie song. I'd heard a lot of him on hip-hop compilations with other artists, but never actually listened to any of his solo stuff from back in the day, so this kinda surprised me. Very cool though. Looked up the old video for it as well, and its kinda entertaining. :)
