commands in minecraft?

so i made my server in minecraft and i put op <my name> in the op txt but i cant make commands in my server like i cant change the gamemode or anything what am i doing wrong if you guys could help me out
yea i put in the / but still it doesnt work and mcadmin wasnt doing anything
