Coming in 2011 the Planet of the Apes prequel nobody was begging for.

In the latest of a series of franchise-related release date announcements, 20th Century Fox revealed this afternoon that the tentatively-titled Rise of the Apes, a prequel to Planet of the Apes, will open June 24, 2011.

In Fox's bulletin, they provided a very basic story outline: "Rise of the Apes (Tentative Title) is an origin story in the truest sense of the term. Set in present day San Francisco, the film is a reality-based cautionary tale, a science fiction/science fact blend, where man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy." Fox also pointed out that Rise of the Apes would be the first entry in the series to use motion capture to create computer-generated apes instead of using costumed actors. WETA Digital has been put in charge of the visual effects, and they will be using some of the effects technologies developed for Avatar.

James Franco is to star in Rise of the Apes, the prequel to the 2001 film Planet of the Apes.

The actor will play a scientist who intervenes in the war between humans and apes, Variety reports.

The film is said to deal with the consequences of human experiments in genetic engineering which lead to extremely high intelligence in apes.

Rise of the Apes is scheduled to begin filming on July 5, with a release date of June 2011.

Rise of the Apes will share the June 24, 2011 date with Disney/Pixar's Cars 2. Also currently scheduled for June 2011 are Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom, X-Men: First Class, Fast Five, Something Borrowed and Green Lantern.
 
If they make the apes like the smurf people in Avatar then this film potentially could blow the rest out of the water in June next year. I think Fast Five and Something Borrowed are in for a hiding that month.
The biggest stumbling block is if it's not in 3D, which so far it hasn't been announced it will be, will it be a big draw when you have superhero films and Kung Fu Panda as well as The blockbusters from May to contend with?
 
I've got every Planet of the Apes movie on DVD and love them, even the Tim Burton one :p

So happy to see this film is coming out, would have preferred to see a sequel from Tim than this but it will do :)

Me too. Even got the series.

l was about 10 when ITV [Southern] aired the series on a Sunday night.

I've got some great memories from watching that show.
 
I've got an idea for a film about a teenage wizard whose parents die and is seeking revenge. If you know any movie producers then I have a feeling it could be a big hit ;)
 
Thats a great idea, i can believe someone hasnt made a film about that. I tell you what, write a book based on this first and we can go from there :)
 
You've got it wrong! A successful screen writer enever has ideas of their own. You should join a creative writing class and nick all you classmate's ideas. Then you write a book. Or why not read a children's book like the ones by Beatrix Potter, change the names of the characters and turn that into a film. "Barry Bunnie's Garden."

I would like to see a sequel to Tim Burton's version. I think the scene at the end set it up perfectly. I am not sure how the film would work in 3D, apes flying at me.
 
I have them and the TV series as well. I like the Burton one as well. I think the concept idea is great.

I'm just not sure that there is a need for a prequel to be made. The Burton film didn't cause the sensation they were hoping for which suggests people aren't going to be rushing to see this unless it's another Avatar. We have to see it because it's in 3D (if it is) or because the CGI apes are amazing.

I would much rather have people in masks and make up than CGI apes. It's a change that IMO isn't needed.

I wonder how different this will be to Conquest of the Planet of the Apes?
