College paying for boys sporting expenses, but not girls.. Is that legal?

At a college my friend goes to they are always treating the boys better. They have a lot more sports things for them. That's ok. but the school pays for the boys to travel to events & gives them food money / pays room and board .

When the girls go to school sporting events out of town they usually have to drive (no bus) and THEY have to raise the money to go themselves - or dont go - they also pay for own food and make it a day trip

Is this legal?
All are OFFICIAL school events.
I could get proof in the sense that people will say something. one teacher even laughed about and asked the girls how they felt
They dont have any official 'sponsor"
someone may donate, i don't know.
I know for sure it's not the boys parents
i dont know. I still find it suspicious. - there are mulitple boys sports, all paid for. i cant imagine that not one girls sports would even have a little bit of sponsorship
wow. this has really opened my eyes

A few things to consider..

Men's athletics generally generate revenue for schools. People pay to see the games and large colleges receive a great deal of income from the TV and marketing rights

Woman's sports generally cost the college money as they do not have the same draw.
