College history question?

In my college history class (after 1876) we are required to know a series of essay questions, one of the questions reads as follows.

"The decade of the 1960's is noted for the counterculture movement that peaked around 1968-1969. Discuss the impact of this movement on American society. What were its origins? What were some of the main causes that men and women rallied around? What were some of the lasting impacts of the counter culture movement?

My problem with this question is that I don't know what exactly they are referring to by "counter culture". Do they mean specifically "hippies" and students for a democratic society, left winged politically active college students. Or are they referring to the gay rights activist, abortion controversy, gay rights, environmentalism that also saw a sharp spike during this time frame?
