Coldwater fish that would go well with goldfish?

I bought a 55 gallon tank with the intention of making it a corydoras catfish species tank, and I went to my local fish store to buy a filter and everything. The manager sold me 3 comet goldfish for cycling purposes and told me to bring them back for store credit in about 3 months so I can get the cory cats that I want. But, as I started to take care of my goldfish, they each developed their own little personalities and I got attached to them. I just don't have the heart to take them back where they'll be sold as feeder fish or put in a bowl as a pet for a child. So i'm not going to be getting rid of them. But to the point, what are some interesting types of coldwater fish I can put in with my goldfish? I had to scrap the ideas of getting cory cats for obvious reasons.

Goldfish can get along with a lot of different fishes. In my 55 gallon, I have 9 goldfish about 3 ", 5 Black Neon tetras, 5 Cherry Barbs, a 5 " Ranchu Goldfish (12 months old), and everybody's Happy. They Have been in there for about 8 months (the neons and the barbs) My goldfish about 3 months and they have doubled in size. I should mention before people freak out, that I run a Aquaclear 110 Filter and a magnum 350 canister. I like my tanks clean and flowing! The cory cats can be added to help keep the bottom clean even though the Goldfish will do a lot of bottom cleaning too.

Because goldfish have so many things that need to be watched they are actually quite the unique fish to keep. As in if you have a goldfish, that goldfishes companions should be other gold fish. While they are small you can keep them with white cloud mountain minnows but once he goldfish grow big enough mouths they will eat the minnows.

Also if you are thinking about getting fancy gold fish i would leave those out too because the fancy goldfish isn't as hardy or fast as the comets.

You can get some more comet goldfish or some feeder fish or Shubunkins.
