Colditz

The BBC series Colditz, originally screened in the seventies, has just started a repeat run on Yesterday. Episode one has just finished.

Why isn't British TV drama this good anymore?

Greatly enjoyed it last night - anyone spot a young Mark McManus (Taggart). But there seemed to be a weird combination of studio and film inserts which appeared a bit unnecessary. Made in 1972 according to the credits,In the next episode they move to Colditz itself.

Quite enjoyed this but found it a bit dated. I also thought that it was a bit far fetched in the way they were able to get filthy in the cellar but managed to get cleaned up so easilly without being spotted by the guarRAB.
I can't believe that it was first shown in the early 70's, I remember it first time round

That's nearly 40 years ago, Sherlock :-)

I was about 20 when it was first shown, and I've never seen it since.

What struck me about the first two episodes was how slowly the plot developed, compared to how they do things nowadays .... and how readily I assumed (now) that everyone 'nice' was a Gestapo Plant, which I didn't at the time. Conspiracy Theories, eh?
Damn you, Oliver Stone ! :-)

The picture quality is always unsettling when they do. You had a bit of Mark McManus tunnelling (obviously in the studio) and another bit of the same tunnelling on film ! I know the main Colditz exterior set was at the old Ealing studios which were then (1972) owned by the BBC.

In last night's episode Christopher Neame's character, Lieutenant Dick Player was interrogated by two Gestapo officers, one of whom was played by Terrence Hardiman.

Both Neame and Hardiman would go on to star (although not at the same time) in Secret Army which was created by Gerald Glaister who co-created Colditz

I remember watching this as a kid, it reminded me of the power cuts in the 70's, we'd be sat in the cold no telly and then this quite bleak show may or may not come on, I thought at the time how good they had it, we didn't get red cross parcels.

David McCallum got in a lot of stuff around this time, I can't remember a weird series he was in, he was full frontal with his guts hanging out, they did some TV. in the 70's

Wasn't there a Monty Python sketch which spoofed going from film to video?

There's a scene in Colditz where one of the officers has been on the roof, having a bit of nose around, then climbs inside and it's suddenly back to the studio.

Loved this as a kid. Looks a bit boring so far. Hope it picks up in the castle. Does look like a spoof sometimes. The Herr Flick/Count Dracula character that interogated Dick Player (snigger) was camp as anything. That episode went on a bit. Didnt know who was english and who was german by their accents either

Yeah really enjoyed this as a Teen , i visted Dresden in the early 90s , and went to see Colditz castle then, you couldnt go up then, but we were told it was where the loc filming was done ,
Was the Epsoide shown yesterday the same one as the other day., or not ?

Have to say the board game was brilliant! I can remember many a school holiday being engrossed trying to escape via the staff car-and for some strange reason a mate of mine always left one of his men in the bog for the entire game.

Whatever happened to it? Im assuming its still not available.
